State tag office have temporary tags?

Alright, so I brought a car while on vacation, and i called my homestate depo of motor vehicles to get new tags, but they dont do that stuff over the phone. So after talking to a guy for along time, he said he was going to mail me a temporary tag. I have to drive from Illinois to Atlanta next week, and i want to make sure this guy isnt jiving me. Has anyone here ever seen or been issued a temp tag? Because i have never seen one
