Crying like a sissy cause of a bug...?
Ok, I know I have bug phobia. I don't even like butterflies or ladybugs. I can deal with ants if there aren't that many of them. I haven't always been that way. I remember playing with rollie pollies and worms when I was young. So I don't know when I started getting freaked out. But I didn't think it was THAT bad since I don't freak out when I see pictures of bugs.
But last night, I was in the shower and happened to look up and saw a huge palmetto roach above me and I totally freaked and jumped out of the shower. I was yelling for my boyfriend and was crying I was so scared. And it just weirds me out that I was crying because of it. I haven't cried from fear since I was a child and it really got me thinking. I realized my phobia is worse than I imagined and would like to somehow get over it. I've read that I should get closer to bugs (I can do that if they're enclosed) or have them on me. But I refuse to do that. Is there any other way?

I'm the exact same way. I don't mind butterflies or even ladybugs, as long as they aren't on me, but any type of roach/palmetto bug/beetle/etc, I freak out. I refuse to get close enough to kill them and at 20 years old I'll still call for my dad, mom, or boyfriend to kill it. If I'm alone in the house and see one, I'd rather leave the house until someone gets home than kill it. I know it's stupid, but I can't help it. I've never called it a phobia before, but it very well may be.
I keep expecting it to get better as I get older, but it's stayed the same for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I live in South Carolina, and those palmetto bugs are EVERYWHERE. I just kind of avoid them by not going out on the porch at night during the summer, etc. Seriously, I won't even go near a DEAD one...that's how bad it is.
I'm in my second year of psych in college and we're learning about phobias now. The only real treatment there is would be to face the fear. I refuse to have them on me either, so we may be out of luck. I know my question didn't help you much by giving an answer, but you're not alone!
