A gaming computer is tuned up for speed compared to a usual run-of-the-line standard computer.
For instance, the RAM will usually be of a larger and faster quantity, i.e. a normal computer may have 1GB of 667Mhz RAM in One Slot. A gaming Machine will usually have upwards of 2GB of 1066Mhz RAM in 2 slots. These help it to compute the vast amounts of data the game requires.
The Graphics card is another factor. A graphics card is the processor that crunches down on all the pixels, colours and other miscellaneous features that make up your display. a faster graphics card with a larger amount of VRAM (Video RAM(Random Access Memory)) will help make the game play smoother , crisper, improve the Frames Per Second and make it altogether nicer to play. a standard computer will of course have a smaller graphics card, because it wont usually come across any information worth a big amount of processing. For instance a standard PC may have a Nvidia GeForce 9400M with 256MB VRAM (shared with the system RAM),, whereas a gaming computer may contain a Nvidia Quadro FX 4800 with 1.5GB of independent RAM. This will make a big difference to your gaming experience.
The CPU will undoubtedly make a difference as this is where the information is processed. A faster processor with more cores is the choice for gaming computers, whereas a standard computer may have a slower CPU with less (or maybe even 1) core. This is because a game requires lots of information to be processed pretty much instantly. The processors speed these days are measured in Gigahertz. Basically the more the merrier. so for instance a normal PC may have a Intel Pentium 4 processor with 2 Ghz. A gaming computer on the other hand will most likely have a processor like a 3 Gigahertz quad core i7 processor.
This pretty much sums it up, that gaming computers are generally more powerful then standard PC's. There are exceptions to this rule however and the boundary can be a faint line.

The most important difference certainly is the graphics card, being the component of the computer with the biggest influence on the overall performance of modern computer games.
While a fast processor, enough RAM and a fast harddrive help to run games faster, the latest games often require an up-to-date graphics card to run at all.
Depending on what games you play (how old they are, what resolution you play in, how much graphic effects you have enabled), a "normal" computer may be sufficient for you, as even the standard onboard graphics cards of new computers are a lot faster than what "gamer's graphics cards" were a few years ago.

A gaming computer usually has a very good video card, like Nvidia geSeries, while a normal computer has a mediocre video card, or uses the CPU for video processing. In addition, gaming computers have more RAM, usually a dual-core or quad-core processor, and a better type of RAM, like DDR3-1333.

One is built by an individual with parts chosen specifically for compatability, price, performance, or even style, and the other is put together by a company with an overall warantee for the whole machine. Just like the difference between a Honda motorcycle or a custom chopper. I build my own because most of the time I can put the pieces together and price them for cheaper than comparable units on the market.
