I have a '97 Isuzu Rodeo with strange overheating problem?

It will overheat after only a few minutes of driving, but if you turn the heater and fan on all the way it goes down.

One other weird issue is if I stuff the accelerator and it goes into the passing gear the temp needle drops like a rock. Otherwise , neither RPM's or speed help at all. Even 70 on the freeway and it's still going up, but stuff the gas, it downshifts and then it goes down again? My thoughts are that it needs to be flushed out, What's your opinion? TIA

Update:

@the wise one

When the vehicle shifts to the passing gear, I watch the temp gauge move quickly back to a normal low temperature...about 1/4 the way into the gauge, but I am not sure what the temp actually is.

It moves a little faster than a second hand on a watch.

Update 2:

Also it doesn't heat up any faster than a car w/o problems, but it just continues to keep getting hotter.

If we turn the heater and fan on...it's still above normal temp but not near the red zone.

Several Things; Check that Both Radiator Fan (Cycling as engine Heats & Cools) & A/C Condenser comes on and stays on. Make Sure Radiator/Condenser Surfaces are Clean & Fins are Straight for Max. Airflow. Your Thermostat is Sticking and Needs to be Replaced, Boil/Flush Out Cooling System and add New 50%-50% Anti-Freeze & Clean Water "Used all year Round".

Unlikely to be engine fan if it warms up so quick. Also, fan failure would not be a problem at 70 mph as there is enough air passing through the radiator at any speed from 20 mph upwards.

    You need to check for:

    Low coolant.

    Blocked radiator.

    Blown head gasket.

Try the flush and then refill and see how that goes.

The temperature drop when you kickdown is a weird one. Does gauge drop back to zero? Am wondering if this is some electrical fault where the kickdown affects the temperature sender. Mind you, that is just as strange.

    Good luck with it!

the fan in engine compartment is not working or fan clutch is not operating properly

    Stuck thermostat but unlikely

also possible, Low fluid or air pocket.

If temp goes down with highway speeds?
