City, state, and country names...why?
I'm in the US. Do people around the world also refer to US cities also by the state the way we do here? For example we would say Las Vegas, Nevada, US to refer to it internationally, but we don't refer to Munich, Bavaria, Germany, we just say Munich, Germany. It seems to flip flop a little in Canada. In the US we usually refer to Toronto, Canada, not Toronto, Ontario, but we usually say Vancouver, British Columbia or Halifax, Nova Scotia. (I don't know how old I was before I realized Nova Scotia was part of Canada and not it's own country.)
I don't know if this is only how people in the US do things or not. Any thoughts, please.

I agree with the other answers. I used to live near Hollywood, Florida, which would be called "the Ft Lauderdale area" . I tell people I was born in Chicago and they know exactly where I mean, but anything much smaller has to be referenced to a bigger city. I live in the Tampa area, I don't specify which suburb.

Well, you would be surprised how many Las Vegases are around in USA but there are no two Munich in Germany. Its just used ti pinpoint to Las Vegas IN NEVADA not some other Las Vegas. Buy a USA map and look for small towns and there is a big chance that you will find more than 5 Las Vegases in USA. Also, you can take a look at ''Pick of Destiny'' movie, where the main character was told to find his fortune in Hollywood, and he goes all around US trying to find the right one. :D

If it's a well known City it probably stands on its own, like New York City is known so it's just NYC, but if they were talking about Morgantown, WV, which isn't internationally known, they probably say something like Morgantown, West Virginia in the United States. They also compare things in relation to large cities, so since Morgantown is close to DC they might say Morgantown it's close to Washington DC.

It also depends on where you happen to be in the US. If I refer to Buffalo anywhere in the Northeast, everyone assumes I mean Buffalo, NY.
But here in Texas, there is another Buffalo, and there are others out West as well.
Another point, my wife will tell people we are from New York, but I quickly say Buffalo, otherwise they would think we lived in New York City, shudder the thought!
