Why isn't my camera uploading pictures to my computer?

Sometimes when I connect my camera to my computer (with the proper USB cable) it doesn't register. I plug everything in and turn the camera on, and nothing happens. Other times it works properly; the screen pops up and the pictures transfer accordingly.

What's the deal? Both the camera and computer are new, and obviously the cord works because I don't ALWAYS have this problem. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? It's really frustrating.

When all else fails try using a card reader. It's quick, simple a very painless.

I'd recommend a card reader. They're available where every cameras are sold for little $$

Readers take away all that hassle, no cable no extra software.
