Why do babies suck their thumbs?

Even in utero, this reflex is developed rather early. Why is this? What makes babies want to stick their thumbs in their mouths?

i'm guessing its a natural thing for babies to do, even in utero, some usually do it for comfort, my youngest son sucks his thumb from time to time if he is tired and wont have his dummy (pacifier).

so i'd say for comfort :) hope this helps

In addition to providing food, sucking provides tremendous relief for anxiety for an infant.
