Water Heater questions...?
I am considering tankless. What are the benefits of going with a gas or electric tankless water heater? Pricing and effiency? Performance and longevity? What would you professionals prefer in your home?

When you go with a tankless water heater or inline water heater as they are also called you will save money and energy. However although the inline water heaters are called demand or on demand water heaters, they have a delay when you start them up so isn't instant. So you would have to weigh which is more important to you. I found some pros and cons to tankless and inline water heaters at the website below. I know if you install a gas tankless water heater you really need someone approved by your gas company - that's what we found out when our gas water heater (not tankless) was leaking. Also check your local codes for permits (we have to replace and are considering an inline water heater) - that's what our gas company man said.

I still have a electric hot water heater in my home but will be putting in a gas tankless unit when it dies. They are more efficient than a tank style as they don't hold heated water all day when you don't need it. I wouldn't suggest replacing a perfectly good water heater with one to try to save money but if yours dies then i think the small extra expense of one is worth it.

I would suggest that you buy a name brand unit such as Rinnai. I see few problems with these. Be aware that many Plumbers who install tankless units do not do maintenance on them. You will probably find that any unit you purchase must be installed by a professional, to keep the warranty intact. Personally, I think the amount of time it takes to recoup the cost of a tankless unit is too long.
