At what age did you stop telling your parents everything?

When I was three. Really. Why? We lived on a farm, in the country. No city lights peeking in through the window at night--and no night lights. Pitch black at night. I had a nightmare, I awakened, terrified, because in the dream I was being chased by a bear, and my dad, very annoyed at being awakened by a three-year-old, came to the door, flipped on the light, made no effort to comfort me, let alone cross the room to tuck me in or hug me....said, "See, the light is on, there is no bear! NOW, GO TO SLEEP" in such a hateful voice that I knew I had better not call out again. He then turned off the light and left me there alone in the dark, terrified of an imaginary bear and a very real and scary dad.

So, there I was, hunkered down under the blanket, frightened and alone, and I had just learned at the age of three that the only person I could really count on was myself.

It was a life-changing and scary event...I am glad I was smart enough, at that age, to have that realization. It has made me extremely self-reliant....it has made me become a compassionate, empathetic person, who goes out of her way to help others, and it has made me, above everything, a very good mama to my two boys. It taught me the kind of parent NOT to be!

I stopped telling them most things at a pretty early age. I was distant by the age of 12. I'm 20 now and am very distant, barely ever talking with them. When I do, it is fake and I say only things that are relevant. Since the age of 12 or so, I somehow haven't felt a need to have a relationship with my parents.

I started lying to them at around age 7. Started having secrets but not sure what to tell them around age 5.
