Yes, but you will need to purchase a router. They can run anywhere from $25 to $200 for a consumer grade router. You can purchase an enterprise-grade router for several thousand, but that's WAAY overkill for connecting two computers (usually meant for a a hundred or more).
Go to Best Buy, Walmart, Costco, BJ's, Target, RadioShack, or Amazon to pick one up.
The brand of modem doesn't really help. Is it a cable modem? If so, those usually use DHCP and are plug and play. DSL often uses PPoE, which requires some configuration on the router. Most internet service providers will be able to guide you through the process on the phone.
If it's a dial-up connection, you'll either have to get a special router with built-in dial-up modem, like this one http://compnetworking.about.com/b/2005/10/16/wifly... or set up a standard Linksys to your computer with a dial-up modem and use Internet Connection Sharing. The latter option requires the most configuration and know-how.
