I am starting to slow down breast feeding. Did this happen to you when you did too?

My son will be 14 months so I am deciding to finally stop feeding him. Since I started to slow down the process, my left boob has almost totally dried up, while my right is still very full. Because of this I ended up feeding my son from my right boob more often followed by my left after each feeding, this being the case my left is almost done. I tried alternating the breasts, the left in the am feeding followed by the right (Which has more milk) and then the right at night and then the left , so they both are the same. I noticed when I fed my son this morning after not feeding him in the AM for the last two days, my boob on the left was almost throbbing, is this normal? I am assuming since it's basically done, there is nothing in there and the glands are getting pumped to death. I dont want to stop totally but this really hurt. And my right is still very full so want to at least go to the night feeding for the next week or so, or until I am totally done. Sorry so long, any help would be great. just want to see if this pain is normal - thx!

I figure that since you stopped feeding him in the morning for two days your breast must have started the weaning process. The milk in your breasts starts to dry up or the ducts in your breast is clogged. After I stopped breast feeding my breasts were hurting too. My doctor recommended me to put those breast heating packs to relive the pain. I also had this pain when I was breast feeding him still. The breast that he nurses on will be the one with the most milk. That's why they tell you to alternate during the feedings. This website can probably help on how to wean your baby without your breasts hurting so much. Hope this helps

I believe it sounds like you are engorged. Most women are supply and demand. As long as you are getting enough hydration yourself your body should be producing as much as baby needs. Now if you and baby tend to favore the right side (as I did with all 3 of mine, it was just easier for me) it is very normal for the opposite side to dry up and there is some hardening and discomfort with that. As long as you arent in any pain or the tissue around your breast doesnt feel feverish or red. You are just fine and great job mom for hanging in there and giving baby a great start!!!

Sounds like you could have a clogged milk duct.I would massage your breast and apply a warm compress to it,and then feed. You maybe should just stop breast feeding all together...if the condition worsens or you notice the area is warm to the touch(could be infected if it stays clogged). If it does continue after you do the above things, then I would see your doctor. But your baby can go straight to cows milk too.A great website is Kellymom.com Its Great and will answer lots of Q's.you may still have.Good luck!
