Banning Pit Bulls in Indiana?

My dog got attacked by a pit bull mix..this is the dog's 3rd attack in 2 months. Animal control is no help UNLESS they see the action..so who do I contact in my state to try to get these dogs banned as they already are in some states?

Update:

Yes, I do know for sure it is boxer/pit bull...and just a week ago an 8 yr old girl in IN got KILLED by one...how many deaths do we need to watch by pit bulls??

Update 2:

The police officer i talked to said they can do nothing and referred me back to animal control. Everyone is afraid of law suits...but until then people, kids are being mauled..and it's usually by the pit bulls who are bred for fighting

Update 3:

You cannot deal with owners who won't answer their door! They didn't even answer when animal control came (who left a note to call them..and the owner has not..go figure). I was walking my dog on sidewalk...so NO it's not something I've done wrong or the other 2 cases in the last 2 months!

Update 4:

It's not a loose dog...it gets out of the house and goes AFTER other dogs!

I'm not telling you what to do, but if a dog in my neighborhood became a life threat to my children, and the police did nothing, I would make sure my children were safe........no matter what.

  • These dogs may be banned in some cities, but the ban has proven time after time that it is a complete and utter failure. And some cities have even recognized that it has failed..

What bothers me the most, is that people think that if they ban a breed, that ultimately fixes the problem automatically.. and guess what.. IT DOESN'T. All the ban does is target RESPONSIBLE owners, not irresponsible owners nor backyard breeders. Because guess what ? Irresponsible owners will continue to keep there dogs reguardless if they are banned and same for dog fighters and backyard breeders. They DON'T care if there is a ban in place.. Responsible owners end up taking the heat for something that BYB's and irresponsible owners caused.

BYB's are breeding shitty dogs that are unstable and aggressive and that alone is a problem.. But BYB's happen in every breed, not just APBT's. Then we have irresponsible idiots who want this breed to make them look tough or need to have something to fill there pants that they were missing from the get go..

Using that "how many more deaths need to be watched by pit bulls ?" speech.. has been done to death.. There are plenty of attacks and maulings that are done BY OTHER BREEDS. There just hardly reported..

For example, I read an answer that said a GSD mauled and killed it's owner, and it only got picked up by ONE, lets repeat that again ONE, news station.. 3 days later a "pit bull" bites a child and it gets picked up by over 90 news stations including to or 3 major news stations..

  • I'm sorry that happened. Unless, this is the same dog that keeps coming into your yard I would take a good look at yourself. Are these attacks happening because of something you're doing?

You can't just report a dog breed to be banned in your state. Do you know the owner of the dog? Do you even know if it is a "pit bull" mix? Confront the owner of the dog.

My dog was once biten by a chihuahua, but I didn't try to ban them. I was attacked by a random lab on the street, and I didn't try to ban them. I found the owner.

Find the dog's owner. Deal with the dog and its owner, NOT the breed.

ADD: APBTs (I assume that's what you mean by "pit bull") are sweet dogs when trained right, like all dogs should be trained. Idiot owners that train them to be bad or don't train them at all are the problem. http://dontbullymybreed.org/

ADD2: Then call Animal Control to come and find this dog as many times as you have to. Banning the entire breed isn't going to get that loose dog off the streets. DEMAND they look down the streets for this "neighborhood terror". If the dog is causing this many problems, they will.

Banning pit bulls is not the answer, as most are very good dogs.

You need to find a way to deal with THIS dog, not the breed as a whole. Some owner has taken no responsibility for their dog which is now causing damage. See about filing a law suit if animal control won't help. If you can contact the owners of the other injured dogs, get them involved in the law suit. That's what's going to make a difference.

So because your dog got attacked three times by the same dog, which happens to be- in your opinion- a 'pit bull mix', you want them banned?

    No, sweetie.

You REPORT that particular dog and the owner, file a police report, etc. etc.- you don't ask for all dogs of that particular breed to be banned. I was once bitten by a Jack Russell, and I didn't tantrum and ask for Jack Russells to be banned in my local area.

    ***

ANY DOG IS CAPABLE OF KILLING SOMEONE.

    Fact.

My country has banned pit bulls but we STILL have dog related deaths! Two rottweilers killed a baby, a Bulldog last week caused 'life-changing' facial injuries to a six year old girl- there is ALWAYS going to be bad owners who don't train their dogs correctly, and there's always going to be problems.

We even had a man who died from a /hamster bite/ that went septic.

Blame the owner, not the damn breed or even the damn dog.

How thick do you have to be?

Oh please tell me how you Identified this dog as a "pit bull mix" Do you actually know the owners of the dog?

Besides why should EVERY responsible pet owner in Indiana with a "pit bull" (do you know how many breeds and just all around mutts that generic term covers?) Have to suffer because ONE idiot can't control their animal?

Should your dog have been attacked? No.

should AC being sitting on their asses? No but guess what you want to blame someone, blame the people who voted in your local government as they are the ones who control the budget which AC usually gets very little of.

And again should innocent friendly dogs be punished because of this idiot owner and YES he's the real problem because guess what it doesn't matter WHAT breed of dog he/she has odds are EVERY dog would be untrained, aggressive and out of control.

Are you going to be calling for a ban of Labs if their next dog is one and attacks your dog?

"and just a week ago an 8 yr old girl in IN got KILLED by one.." And again why should GOOD dogs be punished for the acts of other dogs due to their SHITTY OWNERS? By the logic shouldn't all Christian's be getting their comeuppance for all the crap they have pulled throughout history?

Do I feel for that girl's family? Yes no one should have to loose a child, but that "never shown aggression" line is BULL. Nearly EVERY "pitbull" in an "unprovoked" attack has shown aggression before and it was either overlooked or explain away. Her death is on her parents for keeping a dog they KNEW was trouble. No one ever wants to admit they had a dangerous dog on their hands.

".how many deaths do we need to watch by pit bulls?" Some Christian you are.

"but until then people, kids are being mauled..and it's usually by the pit bulls who are bred for fighting" DOGS BRED FOR FIGHTING ARE ANIMAL AGGRESSIVE NOT HUMAN AGGRESSIVE.

These are simply badly bred poorly trained dogs in the hands of IDIOTS who bought from IDIOTS who have no clue about breeding sound animals.

BTW there is already BSL in certain parts of Indiana http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/Locations/ind...

And if you really want to help why not push for more funding for Animal control. Push for tougher punishment of ALL owners of "dangerous" dog regardless of breed.

What about the SPCA? Since the dog is attacking other dogs, this group should know what to do. It's the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Try them and see if they will help.

And why didn't Animal Control help? If they get enough complaints they might.

Why ban a entire breed by one dog that isn't correctly trained? Im quite strong on the breed banning and the negativity on certain dog breeds. What you SHOULD do is knock on the owners house and complain to them whilst filing a complaint at your local police station, i don't see why decent APBT owners should suffer because of this one dogs irresponsible owner, if i lived in your state and read this heck it would be me to watch out for not my dog she may look mean but the worst she does is licks the skin off of you.

why not move to one of those areas? Ignorant people should stick together!

Guess what? Unless a crime is taking place, police can't do **** either. *GASP*

Call the cops if you see a loose dog. We have a ton of them here as well and the laws we already have need to be enforced.

Source(s): Then get off your ass and get to the streets. DEMAND that they enforce the laws already in place AND HOLD OWNERS ACCOUNTABLE. op when my neighbor was neglected his beagle I had to call AC over and over and over again, harassing them to get them off their asses. It sucks but sometimes to get anything done you ave to make yourself into a nuisance. Eventually someone will get tired of hearing from you and do something.
