Breastfeeding during pregnancy?

My daughter is 16.5 months old and I still nurse her about 3 times a day or more.

I am planning to TTC in August, and my daughter is not showing signs of wanting to wean.

I don't want to nurse her during pregnancy, because I can lack vitamins which I'd rather reserve for the upcoming baby.

My daughter screams and cries if I decide not to nurse her, so I have to give in.

Has somebody breastfed during early months of 2nd pregnancy, is it bad, does it make you lose nutrients? Thank you.

I've nursed during pregnancy twice. Who told you about vitamin loss? I've never heard that before, and all my friends nurse through pregnancy. With my first, she lost interest after my milk dried up. That was right around 12 weeks. I feel bad for only nursing her for 14 months, but she wasn't that attached to it and my nipples really hurt. With my second, I nursed her through most of my pregnancy. Around 6 or 7 months, I asked her to stop nursing because my nipples hurt so much. She was not happy, but she was 2 and a half, so she understood. I told her that she could try again after the baby was here and was nursing well, but by then, she was a big girl.

You should keep nursing until either you or baby wants to stop nursing. Period. That's how humans were made, and it works really well. Major kudos for nursing during pregnancy! It's a great way to show your toddler that the baby is not taking her place.

Don't you worry one bit about the lack of nutrients business, its actually a BIG myth. Your body will concentrate on the new baby first, then you and then your nursling. You will not compromise the new baby or yourself. Your daughter might even wean in the early months when you have a decrease in supply or when the taste changes.

I nursed through a pregnancy and tandem fed for 7 months. A very helpful book about all this is Adventures in Tandem Feeding by Hilary Flowers. She talks alot about nursing while pregnant and how it affects your body.

    Really, its an amazing journey.

the nutrients will go to the fetus first then to the baby who is nursing- there is no reason why you couldn't breastfeed while pregnant if you wanted to just make sure to eat well, drink lots of water and take prenatal vitamins. usually around 6 months pregnant your milk will change back to colostrum for the new baby and sometimes that change is enough to make your older child wean on their own terms or you can keep it up even after the new baby arrives- this is called tandem nursing

We found out I was pregnant again when our 2nd daughter was 4 months old and by the time she was 6 months she lost interest in the breast, I don't know if it was because of milk changing back to colostrum or if it tasted different because of pregnancy hormones but yea she weaned herself....
