You live in Jersey, so the logical choice would be the Devils, they are a pretty good team, despite going out in the first round, if you live in a location with a pretty good team you should go with that besides that, just start watching some games and see what team you like to watch play

You should root for whoever is in your area. Don't judge by popularity. That changes too much. Popular teams throughout time: Montreal Canadiens Toronto Maple Leafs Detroit Red Wings New York Rangers Boston Bruins Chicago Blackhwaks They are popular because of the original six. They have a long history and fans recognize them better. The Flyers are a team that isn't in the original six, but always have been popular. Teams popular in the past: Edmonton Oilers Los Angeles Kings Wayne Gretzky made them cool. Don't forget about a very popular team in the early 1980's, the New York Islanders. The Avalanche used to be really popular in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Current popular teams: Pittsburgh Penguins Washington Capitals They have two bright young stars. Popularity is more of a regional thing. And since you asked, I'm a Red Wings and Canadiens fan.

Obviously, nobody can tell you who to root for, although being from NJ and all, most people around there (I'd imagine) are Devils fans. You probably have a few Rangers/Islanders fans too.
I grew up in a watching hockey, my dad's from Pittsburgh and I spent a few years of my life there so naturally, I'm a Pens fan [Fleury all the way! =D]. 2 other teams I like to see do well are the Habs and the Sabres. [Being a Pittsburgh fan in a Red Wings area is certainly an experience...certain friends are only friends in the offseason. Lol.]
You can pick a favourite city, a favourite player, the worst team in the NHL in the interest of rooting for the underdog...it's your call! =D

When I first started watching hockey and didnt know any of the teams or anything, I decided that whoever won the game I was watching, would be my favorite team. That team happened to be the NJ Devils, and the next year, they won the stanley cup. Since your from NJ, they could be your favorite team. Or do what I did and watch a game and just decide by who wins.
p.s. I did this when I was pretty young, like 9 or 10 so Im not a bandwagoner.

Well, I grew up just watching college hockey at the University of Maine (have had season tickets in the family since before I was born.) I didn't really like a pro team until I went to my first NHL hockey game in Boston when the Habs were in town. I watched that game without having a favorite team, although my parents did get me a Bruins sweatshirt since this was a Christmas gift for me, to be able to go to the game. However, I liked the Habs better. I liked their style, their speed, their confidence. I was like, "Saku Koivu this, Saku Koivu that."
And, that's all it took, I started following the Habs. Just watch NHL games (not right now though, since that limits you to just two teams) and see which team makes you feel joyous when they score, and angry when they are scored upon. I knew that the Habs were my team when I got sick to my stomach when they lost, and felt high on life when they won. In fact, they are so much so my team that I'm moving to Canada to go to school in Montreal. Granted, McGill is a great school.
Also, if you're in New Jersey, it'd be natural to be a Devils fan. Or a Rangers or Islanders fan if you feel like getting hated. Or even a Flyers fan. But don't be limited by your home team. I'm not a Bruins fan, even though I'm supposed to be.

I personally belive you should root for the new jersy devils, considiring the fact thats where you came from. I come from Chicago, so i root for the blackhawks.
p.s. so stoked they made it to the finals. :)

Well, if you mean the Stanley Cup Playoffs then there are two teams remaining. If you want to pick from these two, then that would be either the Chicago Blackhawks or the Philadelphia Flyers. I think you should try and catch Sundays game (june 7th) watch them both play and see whichever one you like. Chicago's best players would have to be : Patrick Sharp, Jonathan Toews. Phillies best player would have to be Chris Pronger.
I do enjoy watching the Montreal Canadiens though, their best player would have to be Mike Cammelari!
I think you should check out the Vancouver Canucks next year for sure ! Their best player, in my opinion, would have to be Alex Burrows!
