Why isn't DLP projection TVs more popular?

A couple of months ago I was at Frey's and was amazed at the DLP projection TVs. They were cheap, had huge screens and looked great. So they are not as thin as LCD and Plasma, but compared to a CRT screen, they are virtually anorexic. The only reason I didn't buy one, was they are too wide for my living room.

I imagine it has a lot to do with the fact that they are not flat or wall hanging. This is all the rage. Despite that DLP looks great in everything but a bright room, LCD owns that market for sure. DLP has a film like almost 3d quality to the picture, only plasma gets slightly better, but you can’t get really large with plasma even with the fattest of wallets.

I like the fact that DLP has a bulb I can replace myself. With LCD get burnt or stuck pixels and you’re stuck. Especially bad once you notice it because it will draw your eyes straight to it every time, and have you ever seen LCD do fast motion scenes? Admittedly much better lately, but the technology they are using to get it to 120/240Hz (frame interpolation) makes it lose all the depth and magic, at least to my eyes.

If you want a big screen without the giant price tag this is really the way to go IMHO. The only real downside is you must control the lighting with DLP. Direct sunlight will wash out the screen completely. Mitsubishi makes some real stunners in a 60”, 65”, 73”, and 82”. I know you said you didn’t have room, but maybe the 60” might fit?

It is because they are 12-18 inches deep.

The DLP televisions are wonderful and the best deal for 50-60 inch size.

But go with the Samsung units instead of Mitsubishi. The Mitsu units have had quality control, are over-priced (their first DLP ran a hefty $9,999), and hardly anyone carries them.

I don't know. It may be just the fact they are bigger then the others. I have a 52" Samsung and love it. That is when I get a chance to watch it. My grandson and his friends also love it playing Xbox and PS3 games.
