How do you mask your IP address?

How do I mask my IP address so my ISP can't tell who I am. Say I wanted to download something without my ISP knowing. Say I wanted to use a bittorent and didn't want my internet connection disconnected for said download. Also I have a router not sure if this matters or if there is something I can do with it to accomplish this.

Guardian's answer is absolutely correct. A proxy server which does all of the internet requesting work for you makes the proxy server appear to be you. This is all well and good A true service that brings anonymity to the internet is called Tor. Tor is a second generation onion-router which completely masks your internet usage by routing your internet actions through constantly changing and trusted paths. Details of it in the sources.

sorry can't be done. your ISP knows everything you do and companies (music and movie etc.) are working with the senators and the FCC to make it the ISP's responsibility to report all P2P file sharing practices of their customers. If you were to change your MAC address on your NICs it wouldn't matter, your ISP is keeping a list of ALL of your Internet transactions. It's pretty disturbing, but oversight has always been an issue.

You can't. Your ISP not only assigns your IP address to you, but HAS to know what it is in order to communicate with you -- which means allowing you to use the Internet. Change your IP address and it won't even recognize you.

    Sorry.

You can't ..even a proxy won't hide it

it's not real difficult to trace a "masked" IP
