R&P: What makes any of you think you know anything about music?
I'll just be straight to the point here.
Everyone on here seems to think they are an expert on music. Be it judging someone's music taste, "experts" on certain music genres, or holding oneself above the others because of the music you listen to.
Why though? I really would love to know. Why exactly do you think you have the right to call someone ignorant because they only listen to one genre of music? What makes anyone think they know a damn thing about music, just because they listen to a lot of songs? I can understand knowing a lot about a band, but what I would like to know is, how exactly did it get into your head that you are an expert on music?

BQ: Don't you find the term "elitist" to be over dramatic and a bit ridiculous?
BQ2: What is the one thing you know most about music? (ex: a certain band, genre, singer, etc)

I only listen to music and enjoy it. I dont come here to judge anyones music taste. I dont mind people sharing what knowledge they have, introducing me to new artists and that. Its a public forum and people are entitled to their opinions. I dont understand why people put down peoples music taste. Its not like their ears are listening to it.

Yea I agree. Music is "what sounds good" to whoever listens to it.
I mean I do know a lot about music but I don't ever say whatever music sucks. But I will say stuff like:
Lady Gaga scares the sh*t outta me
Justin Bieber sounds like a girl (not saying he sucks but stating the facts)
I also say that I hate certain music but it is just an opinion and I respect the opinions of others. Unless they are very rash about it.
MQ: Dirty Little Secret - All-American Rejects
BQ: In music, yes, unless you're a musician
BQ2: I know a lot about 2nd generation punk rock... (pop punk) but I guess everyone does because it's mostly mainstream. But I dig pretty deep into the bands and find a lot of underground punk rock bands.

I know about Black Metal the most. Its my favourite genre so I've read a lot about it (the ideologies, the history, the key figures, the style of playing, the sub-genres, the origins, all that) and watched many documentaries on it. I'm not an expert but I'm very knowledgeable about this topic.
About the rest of music... yeah, we all judge other tastes as you have obviously noted but so what? Everyone judges everyone even subconsciously opinions begin to form, and music is a very good indication of character. So when I think a musically oblivious teenager who knows about what's playing on the radio and MTV is musically stunted, so what? Am I wrong?
I've never called anyone ignorant. I detest that word due to its constant misuse to mean someone you dislike or disagree with.
BA: Mmmm, not really.
BA2: Black Metal.

I know what you're saying. In a lot of way, I've never seen a forum this populated with people... I don't even know how to explain it, but there seems to be a certain mindset one is 'supposed' to have I guess. Like Golden Rules of Rock & Pop. Nobody talks about them, they're just there. Like, nobody is supposed to only love classic rock, otherwise, you're an elitist *sigh* That's probably my biggest pet peeve on here. It doesn't make sense.
I personally know nothing, ha. I just like music, so I'm on here to get suggestions and kill a bit of time talking about something I usually don't get the opportunity to talk about. It makes me think, What was this section made for? Was it really to ask what genre is better, or was it more for stuff that is objective? Release dates, music history, etc? It makes me wonder if we're completely defeating the purpose of this place.
MA: Icky Thump- The White Stripes
BA: I think it's the biggest pile of bullshit ever.
BA2: I'd like to think I know quite a bit about the Ramones. I went through a phase were I basically stalked any active Ramones websites looking for obscure, personal info on the members.

Well, you took the words right out of my mouth. I mean i ask a lot about band questions cause it's just what i'm used to. It's not like i'm gonna go and bash other people because they love music i hate, that's just stupid and retarted and creates questions like these which consist of serious people at a breaking point because of a worthless answer that does nothing for the questioner in the end. I know music because i LISTEN to it. I have my own taste, and so do other people. I don't understand why people can't just NOT answer the question if it doesn't even pertain to them. I know a lot about music because i PLAY the music, i play like 7 different instruments (not bragging just stating why :] ). Everyone knows some sort of music, but i feel like it's not about people being an "expert" at music, it's more of everyones raging opinions that gets to everyone. We're an unstable culture, of course that's going to happen. I love how you bring this up it gives me a reason to bring all this ^ up :]
MA: Well back in the day, i didn't actually listen to the music i listen to now, like i listened to the radio. So my favorite song would happen to be Stronger by Kanye West cause that's all i really knew back then.
BA: Yes, why? Because i actually don't know what it means, but i'm going to agree with you :P
BA2: Uhm i know how to play, like i've said, 7 instruments and i know A WHOLE LOT about Green Day :D and just rock music, punk, that stuff!
Love this question btw :)

Some people get way too judgmental about music, commonly coupled with (or caused by?) narrow-mindedness. It's kind of tricky as to trying to figure out why. There is a clash between the subjective and the objective in music; musical taste isn't soley subjective. Just because you like it doesn't mean necessarily that is ranks with some of the best music ever made. There are facts about taste, as loose and often tentative though they are.

Thank you! A lot of people on here judge people who listen to modern pop artists, dance artists etc. I have a very wide music taste and it annoys me when I get hate emails saying I suck because I listen to Lady Gaga.
MQ: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-bCN2ur3pg
BQ: Never even heard of it, tbh. LOL.
BQ2: I know loads about Lady Gaga, everyone I know thinks it's a bit creepy. I know a lot about pop singles from around 2007-2009, then I stopped listening fully to mainstream music and investigated Lady Gaga, Madonna, and various other artists. I still listen to some mainstream music though.

i think people do know about music........but only the music they like, which is why almost anything answered in this section is an opinion. how bout we just say everyone is ignorant when it comes to (some sort of) music.
MQ: Whenever, Wherever - shakira
BQ: nope, i think that term is pretty perfect for some people.
BQ2: well....i've been into the whole riot grrl movement, so i found a lot of bands that followed the movement, one I know the most about is bikini kill and Kathleen Hanna in general.
fun fact:
she inspired the name "smells like teen spirit" (nirvana) by writing "kurt smells like teen spirit" on Cobain's wall. (teen spirit was/ is a deodorant)

Because.. uh, well... I just am, okay?
A lot of people here would disagree highly if I started calling myself an expert of metal. I like nu metal and every bugger here doesn't :)
MQ: There weren't that many good songs released in 2009....
BQ: Agreed. I've always hated that term.
BQ2: Ask me anything about Slipknot or Iron Maiden and I will represent.

I know absolutely nothing about music.
MQ: Either The Drapery Falls by Opeth or Fell In Love With A Girl by The White Stripes
BQ: No, it's a title I wear proudly.
BQ2: I already told you, nothing.
