1992 Jeep Cherokee self diagnostic?

the thing where you turn the key on and off in a specific sequence, My chiltons manual tells my how to do it and it has all the codes but I can't get it to work on my jeep, the manual says this works on '91-'93 model years and mine is a '92, I also tried disconnecting the battery for a few minute (around 2) to reset it or something. the actual scan tool my local auto parts store has is a booklet, not a real scan tool.

How do I get my jeep to do the diagnostic?

Update:

that was in my manual too, didn't do it the first time, did it now still doesn't work.

This is the procedure to use from documentation I have is this the same as your Chilton manual states?

    MIL Diagnostic Mode

    1) Start engine (if possible). Move transmission shift lever through all positions (if auto), ending in Park. Turn A/C switch on and then off (if equipped).

    2) Turn engine off. Without starting engine again, turn ignition on, off, on, off and on within 5 seconds. Leave ignition on the third time. Record 2-digit fault codes as displayed by flashing MIL.

    3) For example, fault code 23 is displayed as flash, flash, 4-second pause, flash, flash, flash. After a slightly longer pause, other codes stored are displayed in numerical order. When MIL begins to flash fault codes, it cannot be stopped. Start over if count is lost. Code 55 indicates end of fault code display.
