Are Trikes Easier / Safer To Ride?

Hi

I was browsing some forums today researching bikes and found out in my state (California) ANYONE with a "Class C" (passenger car) drivers license can operate a street legal three wheeler. Whether it be big, small, a scooter, or a custom job, if it looks like a motorcycle, is made from a motorcycle, but has three wheels, anyone is good to go to ride legally, anytime. The vehicle is registered as a motorcycle and insured as one and all laws apply as one, but legally it can be operated on road as a car. So that is pretty cool.

I understand this is NOT the same as riding a motorcycle. Its less involving, but if a person simply wants the wind in their hair, the feeling of speed, and the sense of freedom a truly open air riding experience affords you, are they fun,and do you feel more safe and stable on a trike then a motorcycle?

Also, what do some of you think of companies such as Ice Bear and Roketa which sell inexpensive "kit" trikes and scooter trikes? Reviews are good, and they are very inexpensive.

Thanks for any replies :)

The only reason I can see to ride one is if you have some kind of disability which prevents you from riding a 2-wheeler. Trikes are inherently more dangerous than bikes because they can tip over and hurt you. The typical conversion with two rear wheels and a bike front end are the most dangerous of all, essentially evil-handling death traps ill-suited to anything but parade duty. Designs like the Can-Am Spyder, with two wheels steering and a single rear driving are more stable, but I have seen (and owned) some designs which were as treacherous as the traditional trikes.

The only 3-wheeled device that can justify its existence on this planet is a vintage sidecar rig, undeniably the best babe magnet on wheels.

I see more and more three wheelers on the road being ridden by ladies and couples... they are not just for the elderly and disabled even though there are plenty of those riding them. I built one recently that was anything but an old guy's bike but yeah, the reason they are the vehicle of choice for the feminine or aging biker community they are more stable at stops.

I've never used a kit to build one. The ones that I've built were converted two wheel bikes.

A trike is for a biker who can't lean or doesn't have balance. I see a lot of them and I know they must be pretty safe. But if you're riding on 3 wheels, it makes more sense to have two in the front and one in the back, then it handles like a 4-wheel car. Like this:the Can-Am Spyder (google it and see).

Three-wheel ATVs have been outlawed here in California because they were so unstable. I guess a 3-wheel Honda Goldwing or Harley Roadmaster is more stable, but you still have to wonder about hard cornering on three wheels.

I ride a 160 hp Triumph Rocket III, and a 100 ci Harley and a Honda Valkyrie. I am not the least bit disabled or neither have a balance problem. My first choice for just the fun of riding is, my 2012 Spyder RT. I have had it over a 100 and I feel quite safe at interstate speeds. I have put over 12000 miles on it. Let them laugh if they want, but I ride for fun and not prestige or that Harley sound.
