Do pond fish always need air?
I just bought some pond fish and I am not sure if I always have to have the air pump on, or if they can survive without it. Also, How deep does the pond have to be so that you can leave the fish in the pond all winter.

in general no
the size of the pond, the depth of the pond..if deep enough then no, if large enough then no other wise keep one on
but in the hot hot weather oxygen gets less in there so it needs to be on
when the weather gets real cold and ice starts, needs air
and a few other reasons
so why not just have a smaller unit pumping air all the time
it will keep the pond in much better shape all around
just like having the water fall into the pond make oxygen get into the water, so you can do it that way, plus it moves the water around too

good luck

I had a pond and the fish go up to the pond surface to get air anyway so it really doesn't matter. in the winter if it freezes there will be air trapped under the ice so the will still be able to breathe. Pond fish like most goldfish like cold water so just make sure it's deep enough to their liking because if not they may try to jump out. hope it helped!

I thought that the pump just helped to stop algae forming. I suppose that as long as nothing covers the surface, you don't really need a pump for an outdoor pond. Use chicken wired over the surface to stop predators from eating the fish.
