Should we change the name of Washington DC?

There is so much confusion, especially with foreigners, when it comes to Washington State (on the west coast, of course) and Washington DC. I recall growing-up in Pennsylvania, where we even had a "Washington, PA" (Washington & Jefferson College is located there and it is also the county seat for Washington County PA.)

It just seems to be too confusing for people. I would prefer that we maybe change the name to District of Columbia or just DC, to prevent confusion around the world.

Any ideas here? Or, let's play trivia. What was the area called before it became Washington DC. I am guessing that it was not always Washington DC, as George Washington himself was not made famous until after we broke ties with England.

I agree with you totally. I've talked to people from places like Australia and Great Britain that were never taught American geography in school, and it confuses them as well. I get emails saying, "Oh, I understand that Washington got hit with some severe storms and flooding. I was wondering how you are making-out." And I have to reply, "That's the OTHER Washington about 3,000 miles to the west of me."

And as for the comment about "who cares what the foreigners think". Yeah yeah. Well, when they want to invest their foreign capital to create manufacturing jobs in the USA where we actually make things, then it becomes pretty important.

Speaking as a "foreigner" from your perspective, I would like to make it clear that we don't all get tied up in knots trying to tell the difference between Washington DC and Washington state. If people do get them confused then I am inclined to say that it's simply because of sheer lack of knowledge/interest, and has nothing to do with them being "foreign".

I've said the same thing for years - Washington confusion!

I live somewhat in the area of Washington, PA & PEOPLE say: Oh, you live in LITTLE Washington. What? Little Washington?

Don't really know what would be the best solution. All I know that I live somewhat in the area of Washington, Pennsylvania!

Same problem: Houston, PA & Houston, TX & many more doubles!

    Absolutely not.

It is known world wide as Washington, DC the capitol of the United States of America. Granted I usually have to say America instead of United States of America.

Before we were the United States the area was in the "Province of Maryland" and then sovereign state in Confederation.

The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia but that was changed in 1871, so no one will remember it by that name today. Sorry, but they have all died out. So no confusion on that part.

Confusion in the United States is caused by sleeping in Geography class as to where the national capitol is located and the state of Washington is located.

To honor our great general that free us from England, many places were named in his honor.

With this all said, I respect your right to say and believe what you may. I proudly served to give you that right.,

Well, it is called DC. Washington is the city, Columbia is the district. I don't think we should officially change it, but we can refer to it as DC in order to avoid confusion.

I don't think so. I think if foreigners are confused by the names of a couple of places, then boo friggin' hoo. I am strictly against the renaming of places just to be politically correct or whatever. It's just not worth making millions of dollars worth of atlas's and textbooks outdated and ticking off billions of people at the same time just so a few immigrants aren't confused.
