In the current issue of Good Housekeeping these dates are explained.
"Use By" is the last date by which the manufacturer recommends the food be consumed so as to still be at peak quality.
"Best if Used By" indicates that quality may decline after the date.
"Sell By" dates tell stores how long to display the product.
Any date stamped on the product refers to the food's quality - not its safety.

canned or jarred foods can last for years - that is why they tell us to stock up on them in cases of emergency.
Bread, milk, other dairy, fresh fruits and veggies, they only last 1-2 weeks after the date.
Eggs can last about 1-2 MONTHS after the best before date.

It all depends on what it is. If its some sort of dairy product I would toss if the date is expired. If its something like can goods, ketchup or mustard I would say maybe a month longer than the date.
