Are there otherwise rational adults who have certain fantasies that are real to them?

I believe in God but not in magic.

Why are there adults who are otherwise perfectly rational and sane, who say that they have actually seen ghosts, angels and devils with their own eyes? Some even say that they've seen Mary and Jesus (even though no one actually knows what they looked like).

How is this possible? I realize that many of them are lying and some people may be mentally disturbed but not all of them.

Therefore, I have two questions:

1. Though sane for the most part, psychologically speaking, can their strong religious beliefs or desire to live in a more magical world actually cause them to create fantasies that seem as real to them as everything else? Maybe I should ask this question in the psychology section as well.

2. Another thing that both believers in ghosts, as well as believers in good & evil spirits (angels and devils) say is that you have to believe in these supernatural beings first, otherwise you won't see them.

This also applies to believing in the traditional mythic view of God as well. Unless you believe that God actually intervenes in physical reality or controls it in some way, then you won't 'sense God's presence'.

Christians will say that you need to 'open your heart' to Jesus for this to happen but does opening up your heart mean shutting off your brain and going completely with your emotions, which are often misleading?

In fact, some people have been so brain-washed that they can't even see now far-fetched the Noah's Ark story is, for example. They will say that "with God anything is possible".

Yes, but it still has to make sense though, doesn't it?

Is faith based on a rational view of God or does "faith sometimes mean believing in things that don't make any sense"? The thing is though, that's a line from "Miracle on 34th Street", a movie about Santa Claus.

Ever since I was a kid, I always thought that faith simply meant belief in God without proof. This is why God purposely does not show himself. If there was proof then what would you need faith for?

This is why I don't believe in the supernatural world as well. Besides, in my 53 years of existence I have never felt or experienced anything even remotely supernatural, anyway.

Isn't this a 'catch-22' situation? I believe in God as a concept but not an intervening, magical God or the supernatural. Some say though, that by not having this attitude, the supernatural will not show itself to me.

But if the supernatural world never shows itself to me then why would I believe in it?

Dear James, it is real and not magic, nor fantasies. There are some people who are more sensitive to spiritual world than others. I myself am also very sensitive to this, while my wife is not. It runs in the family, as 2 of my children also have it, while the rest of my 4 children do not. My mum and sister also have it.

After I become Christian, I prayed to severe the ties between my soul and my spirit. And since then I relied only on the holy spirit of God for guidance and as my councillor.

In regards to meeting Jesus, yes I did once, when Jesus came to rescue me from certain incidence (it is a long story by itself). The thing is, I know it was Jesus by my spirit because of the euphoria feeling of tremendous peace and being so much loved was running through out my veins, and my mind / heart was in such peaceful state that even my body could react so tranquilizing to such peaceful encounter. However, it is true that when I was conscious (or realized what happened with my logical thinking) from that spiritual encounter with Jesus, I could not remember or tell anyone How & what Jesus Looks like, because I did not look at a person / body / form, it was just a bright white light and a spiritual encounter, and my body could only feel the "highness". But, I know by my spirit that He was Jesus.

And mind you, I was not a follower of Christ / Christian back then, I was still a hard-core sinner when Jesus met me and saved me.

I hope you understand what I am trying to tell you. May peace be upon you.

    Shalom.

    JML

  • I am fairly rational when it comes to the supernatural, but I do believe in ghosts. It can be sad I guess, but I have felt and seen things. I don't worry if others believe me or not, but I have felt the most angry or scared feelings in an otherwise empty room that can't be explained. I guess you could call it my imagination, and I can't really explain what I've seen, heard, or felt. As I said, I don't worry about other people believing me and I am very skeptical when someone else says they have seen something. Especially when they say they've seen angels and the like. In my 25 years I've never seen a bird eating spider, but I know I'm scared of them and that they exist. Which is the same argument that religious people use, but I don't take them seriously. Guess I'm a hypocrite. Sorry for the ramble.

whether a person believes in spirits/ghosts or not they do exist. They do look as healthy and ordinary as you so you will not know your seeing something unusual until they disappear.

There are such things as miracles, but most of the time we are too closed off and blinded by worldly issues that these are not seen. Whether these are a phenomenon or God created who knows?

There is no reason why you should believe in anything that does not suit you. Yet I think you will come back to Q/A with something in the coming months. As your questioning and so not shut off from possibilities then you will be shown.

  • I conclude based on evidence that some form of deity is more likely than not but I utterly scoff at such notions as ghosts, magic, clairvoyants, etc. and in addition, I find the idea of alien contact with earthlings among the most outlandish of all paranormal / sci-fi beliefs.

I do in fact experience some form of 'sensation' or 'intuition' on a nearly daily basis that I imagine those with the predisposition to do so might regard as supernatural but I conclude it is just normal and natural brain activity. We can say we obviously live in a world in which no deity intervenes but how do we know gravity and biology are not direct forms of continuing intervention? Our ideas and expectations of gods (both theists and atheists) are naive and prejudiced. All of which we are capable is concluding it is either more likely not than likely or more likely than not and that is as good as it gets under these conditions from this perspective.

I'm 58 now and I've pretty much rejected the idea or concept of a 'God' in the normal sense of the word. There is no 'Christian God', no 'Jewish God', no 'Muslim God', no 'Mormon God', etc. etc., which leaves me with no belief in the supernatural or even the mystical. Once you get to that point, a vague belief in the possibility of a creator seems unbelievable as well, don't you think?

Sometimes, life is easier if you 'profess' belief. Or there is the possibility that you believe in belief.

God doesn't show himself because that 'God' doesn't exist; he doesn't exist for people like you and he doesn't exist for the supremely delusional. Humans made up all religions and all concepts of deities.

OK...but if you're going off about being rational, why do you believe in "god" (even as a "concept") with no evidence of any kind to show there's any such thing?

    Peace.

Same reason there are perfectly rational adults who believe in God I guess. Not much difference in either.

Yeah, and 'God' is one of those fantasies, so 'you' are one of them!!
