vegetarian gaining weight?
In January after watching the movie "Food, Inc." I decided I didn't want to eat meat anymore and became a vegetarian. All my life, I've been active and continue to ride bicycles. Initially, I lost about 10-15 pounds, but soon started packing on the weight again. I attributed this to drinking more alcohol and also not enough exercises. Lately though I am exercising more and drinking less but I am packing on the weight and don't understand why. Here's some info about my diet: I never eat breakfast, only a cup of coffee in the morning with half/half cream, no sugar. I know this isn't good, but I just don't like to eat in the morning. Lunch consists of salad with all the good things like tofu and beans, etc. or I eat a vegetarian burrito, or vegetarian sandwich; egg salad, tuna or cheese. Afternoon snack like a fruit or trail mix. Dinner usually consists of brown rice and curry, brown rice and fried tuna, or any number of vegetarian combos. I do eat snacks like chips and salsa. I never drink soda, or sugary drinks. I do eat dinner late. I recently starting counting calories, and I only go over on the weekends, when I have more than 1 alcohol drink. Could this be the source of why I am packing on more weight, or is it because maybe I'm eating more carbohydrates?
Thank you for all your answers! So I am not exactly a total vegatarian yet. I do eat fish, so I think I am called a Pescatarian.
I do use this as a source of protein in my diet, but I think I am failing with too many carbs. Like one of you said; "focus more around the vegatables"
All your answers are good, going to be difficult to pick the best!

1. You need to eat something for breakfast. Ideally, this would include some protein (an egg, peanut butter on toast, a couple ounces of cheese, etc.) as protein digests slowly so you don't feel hungry later.
2. Watch the refined carbs and limit the trail mix.
3. Count calories based on the amounts you're actually eating, not on what the calorie counter says is a serving. Measure the food. I'll bet you'll find that your portions are bigger than the calorie-counter basis, and that you are therefore eating more calories than you think you are.
4. Though it has nothing to do with your weight gain, just know that if you eat tuna, you're not a vegetarian.

As the others have said it is the breakfast. I also hate eating breakfast in the morning because I am just not hungry and just to sleepy to make something. I only eat because I get hungry later and will pig out if I haven't ate. Here are some great quick ideas for just grabbing something.
1. One of my favs... one a day you don't work or whenever you have an hour or possibly two find a recipe for whole wheat/ whole grain(whatever I don't know which one lol) waffles or pancakes and get all of your ingredients. Make the batter and make the waffles/pancakes. By the way they are just about the easiest thing to make. Especially pancakes. After making the batter you just pour them into a skillet and wait till it bubbles. Then you flip it and wait a minute or so for it to finish. After you make them all (make as many as you can with the batter you prepared) eat some or whatever then take all the leftovers and put them into old bread bags. After stacking them in it put them in the freezer. This way you can grab one in the morning, stick it in the toaster or microwave and voila! You have a quick and extremely healthy and filling breakfast. If you have time to sit down and eat go ahead or if you have to run out of the door, keep single serving tuperwares in your fridge of your fav fruit to grab. It's super yummy and easy.
2. Granola bars...
3. Cereal is super easy and I always get a super yummy high protein mix. Then I add my homemade almond vanilla granola on top and its super yummy and quick. Pour it into a plastic cup and grab a plastic spoon and you got cereal to go.
4. Granola and yogurt. You can get single serving yogurt which is great for on the go or to save money get the big tubs of yogurt. I used to do this before I became vegan. I would put it in a bowl and put my fav granola over it. It was especially great for when I didn't feel like eating because it was more like liquid than food. You can also [ut you fav fruit with it.
5. Leftovers!!!!! Who says you got to have breakfast food for breakfast?? I loved cold pizza because no matter how un-hungry I was I could grab a piece of pizza and basically inhale it lol. Other leftovers are great because it gets the whole "breakfast" thing out of your head and it tastes good too!
6. Fruit. A banana or apple in the morning or whatever else you have is quick, easy, and yummy.
7. Cookies... yes cookies!!!! Look up some oatmeal breakfast cookies or just oatmeal cookies. Make some on a day off and grab two in the morning. It's healthy to a certain point and extra yummy!
8. Whatever. you can eat anything you want, it doesn't have to be breakfast, if you are in the mood for mac and cheese then eat mac and cheese. There is nothing stopping you.
Just remember to slip something in the morning. You could also get those breakfast shakes or whatever if you don't want to eat eat. I sometimes make smoothies too. I walk out the door with a yummy fruit smoothie and a great start on the day.
Good luck!!!

I'd say it's because you eat a lot of carbs. Veggies should be the center of your meals. This doesn't mean you have to cut carbs out, just eat a smaller portion. Try half your plate with veggies, a quarter with carbs and a quarter with whatever you're eating for protein(beans, lentils, etc) It would be good for you to start eating breakfast as this will even out your blood sugar for the day and help you to lose weight.
Btw, that movie changed how I eat too. It totally changed my life :)

ahhh ha!! It's the breakfast! Eating breakfast is EXTREMELY unhealthy. Even though it may seem like it is helping, It isn't. When you don't eat and your hungry, Your body make MORE fat to fill it. That is why you are gaining weight. And you don't have to eat BIG breakfast maybe some eggs and toast or a bagel or even something as small as a granola bar. As long as you have something in your tummy, you should be fine. Hope i could help!!!!

Drink whole milk, eat eggs, cheeses, butter, full-fat sour cream, ricotta cheese, cream cheese; also peanut butter. And soft drinks will make you gain weight if you don't mind the harm they'll do to your body. Oh, and I wish I had your height and weight. Wow.

You didn't say how many calories you are eating, but your portions could be too big. Also cheese is very fattening and not good for you. Trail mix is fattening too if you eat too much of it as are chips.
I'd find out how many calories I need for my height and what I want to weigh and stop the cheese and cut down on snacks. Otherwise your diet sounds very healthy!

It's the carbs, which increases your insulin production, and insulin is a fat-storing hormone. The tofu and beans are good, but things you need to avoid are potatoes, bread, pasta, rice, and crackers. Load up more on green veggies, squash, lentils, eggs, nuts.

Depends on what the weight gain is from. Are you gaining muscle weight or weight from fat? If it's muscle weight it could be from a leaner diet. As long as you have a healthy BMI and healthy body fat measurement you are okay. Also, tuna isn't classified as vegetarian.

Dairy and eggs make you gain weight. Tuna's a fish and thats an animal and that is meat...
