How do I convince my parents that becoming a doctor is just not my thing?

They want me to join a medical college after A Levels and become a doctor. I on the other hand would hate to become a doctor and want to study in an engineering institute and eventually become an engineer because I absolutely LOVE Mathematics and Physics. How do I convince them? I have tried talking to them but they just plainly refuse to listen and say they would cut off their links with me if I pursue MY ambition.

By the way, my mother, father and elder sister is a doctor. My other sister is also studying in a medical college.

Well, that actually sounds similar to what happened to me. My dad also forced me to join a medical college. But after my explanation, he changed his mind. My suggestion is that, you should explain them that although you follow them and study in a medical college, it would be no use coz u don't have the mood to study something you don't like, then everything will become useless. Another thing is that, you should prove them, what you're best at... and what you're born to be. There's no point of following the band wagon. Everyone has the right to choose which path they will take to live their lives. Good Luck!

You should go ahead and pursue your dream. Just because being a doctor runs in the family doesn't mean that you are cut out for it. What's the point of being in a job that you'll be miserable in? I think once they see how much you are passionate about engineering; they will see your side. Good luck!

Your parents want you to find a good career opportunity. They found one and see no better option. You should respect their opinion but the decision is up to you. When you leave you obtain financial independence and should not depend on your parents. Pray to God that your decision would abrupt your family's peace. Everyone has their different gift and talents. Imagine if everyone was a doctor?

I would tell them that i just wouldn't do it for fear that I would take someone's life. I wouldn't want someone's life in my hands! If your family loves you, they'll fall for that or if theyre very religious. I was in the same position once but internally lol. That's how i decided to change my major from nueroscience to aerospace engineering. Hope that helps!
