The sizes are almost identical, the denominations are mostly the same; why?

Yes...
A long time ago... Canada thought they would be able to match our currency by making them look the same.... so when you go to the store and buy something.... and they accidentally give you Canadian quarters which are worthless in US soda machines...thus devaluing our currency against theirs.
Basically they are stealing our money...one Canadian quarter at a time.
