Well - they're the Godzilla and Mothra of the NBA. The celtics have won 17 NBA titles, the Lakers have won 15. They've met in the Finals 12 times (including this season), with the Celtics holding a 9-2 series lead.
Red Auerbach, the legendary coach of the Boston Celtics when they rattled off something like 8 straight championships in the 1960's, was an arrogant SOB who loved sticking it to the Lakers, who were victims of the Celtics several times in that span.
The 1980's rivalry was Bird vs. Magic, a rivalry that started when they met each other in the NCAA championship game in 1979. The two teams met in the Finals three times that decade, with the Celtics winning one and the Lakers two. I was a kid then, but I distinctly remember the rivalry of West coast vs. East Coast, Bird vs. Magic, Blue-collar, gritty Boston vs. Hollywood Los Angeles, and, let's face it - LA's black superstars like Magic, Worthy, and Kareem, versus Boston's white stars like Bird, McHale, and Ainge.

Here's the the thing..I'm a 30 year Laker fan-it's rivalry..The Players still have mad respect for each other..At least back in the day when I became a fan-30 years ago.
"Magic" Johnson of the LA Lakers who put it best while speaking at Larry Bird's retirement party, "Larry, you only told me one lie. You said there will be another Larry Bird. Larry, there will never, ever be another Larry Bird."

Simply because they are rivalries. I think there the two biggest rivalries of all sports. Now the cities hate each other because of Basketball. I think Boston will win tonight 104-96 and then Celtics will win the series in 7.

for years that i can remember they have always somehow managed to make it to the finals and that's a lot... year after year they have to try to prove that they are a better team... its just a huge rivalry... I'm sure outside of the game some of them don't hate each other and can say good game man and walk away happy. but out there on the floor its complete competition there is no room for friending with the other team...

Its one of the biggest rivalrys in sports and it goes WAY back, its probably the second most intense rivalry behind sports, Yanks and Red Sox being first.
