What do you think of the "Hymn to Wikipedia" by John-Luke Mark Matthews?

There's an mp3 at http://picardie3rd.tripod.com/WikiHymn.mp3 and (some of) the parts at http://imslp.org/wiki/Hymn_to_Wikipedia_(Matthews,... I'm not sure quite what to make of it as a piece of music, or as commentary on Wikipedia.

It is interesting. I'm waiting for the conductors' score, but from what I've read of the other scores it is quite a clamourous take on Ode to Joy indeed. The discord is very deliberately done with a rather distinctive effect, and I like how the chorus contrasts with the solo parts with respect to the words. It is a reasonable reflection of views on Wikipedia, as a whole. From a musical point of view, it's a little bit painful because it's so different from the Beethoven it's derived from; as a commentary it is quite clever. I suppose a little of the musicality was sacrificed for the overall mood and structure of the piece being such a distinctive commentary. It's not bad music, just different. Fascinating.

It would be a lot better if instead of all those scores and parts they just handed everyone a sheet that said:

"Play the Ode to Joy tune in whatever key and speed you want but play it as if your choice of key and speed was the only valid choice."

That ought to give the right mixture of randomness and arrogance to properly depict the stupidity of Wikipedia.

It sounds like it's a derivative of the "Ode to Joy" theme from Beethoven's Ninth.

Which is appropriate, since virtually nothing about Wikipedia is original, nor properly credited to the originator, so this fits.

    For Wikipedia music, I prefer:

Frightening, horrifying, bone-chilling, spine-tingling, destructive, awful, dreadful, terrible...

Wait a minute, you didn't ask about Wikipedia, you asked about "Hymn to Wikipedia." In that case: mediocre; it just barely hints at the horror of Wikipedia.
