Just booked a cruise for December?

My boyfriend and I just booked a cruise on Royal Caribbean in December, and I am just wondering if anyone has any advice to make sure it all goes smoothly, like are there things you wish you would have done, you did that you would again, or wish you wouldn't have done?

Like with the dining plans, the drink plans, the added gratuity, excursions?

Thanks!!

I went on my first Royal Caribbean cruise about 6 months ago. I wished that I had never paid for the wine package. I found that the wines they offered were too limited and only could really get a bottle in the dining room. I like to have wine in my stateroom at times and it was a pain to get the wine from the wine package from one of the bars or room service. The wine package was only a little cheaper than just ordering wine by the bottle from the full list, which is quite extensive.

The automatic gratuities were convenient, I would do that again. I didn't book any excursions through the cruiseline, they usually cost more, so we arranged our own excursions. We did the traditional dining vs. my time dining. I've cruised NCL before which has freestyle dining which is same concept as my time dining. I did prefer the traditional dining because you have a set time and table, never having to make dinner reservations or decide on what time to eat. Though you can also do room service if you find your traditional dining time doesn't work too well with your schedule that day.

    Have a great cruise.

Book early. Carnival has a rate called the Early Saver Fare. It's non refundable, but if any lower rate becomes available that you qualify for, they will give you the difference as an onboard credit. Also, by booking early, you'll get the best cabin selection. Those who wait get stuck with "the leftovers." Also, try to travel between December 1 and December 16. These are the lowest rates of the year. The ships are empty because nobody wants to travel. They either just traveled for Thanksgiving or they're getting ready to travel for Christmas.

Regardless of cruising experience, it's always worth visiting www.cruisecritic.com, registering for free, and exploring the site. Be sure to join the roll call for your ship/sailing and meet others on the same itinerary. You'll make friends before you even board! RJ
