What does reincarnation mean...how does this belief system originate ?

Souls do not exist (i.e. consciousness does not transcend death). Therefore, concepts of life after death (reincarnation, heaven and hell, etc.) are null.
I suggest you read Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett.

I have personally experienced a spiritual 'channeling' that I could not rationally explain. Since our spiritual 'self', consciousness, or soul, is metaphysical in nature, and inexplicable by standard thought on this physical plane, there are many 'dimensional' possibilities, one of which might be called "past life". However, we know SO little about God's time, space, and dimensions, that the best we can do is sense that our CONSCIOUSNESS may be eternal in some way. And, that it can transcend space and time, when our minds release more and more of this physical plane. Living here and now with just what we DO have and working to achieve peace amongst our 'family', is such a great challenge as it is, that "spiritual speculation" is just an interesting past time for now. Can anyone EVER recall "NOT BEING"?????

Reincarnation is when your soul returns to Earth in another form after death. It originated from the Aryans, who conquered the early Indus River valley civilizations. They started the Caste System, which separated people by occupation. You could only gain a higher Caste through reincarnation. The ultimate goal was to not be reincarnated anymore, and become one with their major deity, Brahman. This idea is shared with Buddhists, everything except for the Caste System. Siddartha Guatama, the original Buddha, or the "enlightened one" rejected it because it didn't fit with his Eightfold Path. There idea is becoming one with the universe, or Nirvana. That's where the band got it's name.

Reincarnation means coming back in to life after dying. I m not sure 'how' it originated or even where, but I believe it has been around for eternity. It IS in the bible, but I am not going to waste time and space dwelling on it because those who don't believe will argue the points. Going further, all the books written by the Apostles with direct references to it were omitted from the bible. How would the Christian church prosper if people knew they didn't 'need' the church for their salvation??
I believe in reincarnation because I have had MEMORIES from past lives. I do not believe that a human spirit can take on any other form, ie: insect, animal, tree, etc. I view the reincarnation system like our education system. You can choose to go or not to go. You can be 'home schooled', go to a private or public school, go on to college, go to grad school...you get the idea. I feel reincarnation is like that. We choose the lessons we are to learn in order to advance to the next 'grade'...no one is 'better' we all chose differently is all. I do believe that the dark spirits recycle rather than reincarnate...the difference being those who reincarnate get to rest and choose major events for their next lives or even if they want to come back. Those who recycle come right back in without rest, without choices. They turned from God, using their free will and will continue on that path until they turn back to God. They serve their purposes also.
That is just my belief on the subject :)
~Peace~

Much like the concept of an afterlife (heaven/hell/etc.) it arises from the difficulty that the human mind has in imagining itself not existing. Because we see life from our own perspective, we find it difficult to intuitively grasp the concept of the universe continuing without us.
There's also the fact that people are often scared of death, that they will one day cease to exist. Denial of this basic fact can ease this unease.
Hence, we invent ideas like afterlifes and reincarnation that provide an answer to "what happens after we die", providing a workaround for these problems, even if those ideas aren't necessarily based on logic or convincing evidence.

One can not speak of reincarnation and "originate" in the same sentence ;-)
Its origins are lost way back in the mists of time.
Mystical Judaism, Kabbalah, believes in reincarnation down through family lines. They got much of what they know from Egypt and Sumeria, and some from their Babylonian captivity. Before Sumer we have no record.

I do not just believe it. But is true and is proven and I can explain it.
Even thousands of Bibles are written, your doubt is simple and silly.
Since I have gone through my past millions of years, I saw, I have had the experience of dealing with the boy from Jerusalem and the big boy of the Arabian deserts and the present generations who are quoting their sweet advices in a very damn rubbish manner and argue, quarrel and fight, I just like to leave the matter as it is and to share the knowledge to those who has a noble brain and understanding capacity, instead of ceaseless talking and writing.
REINCARNATION is true and the present life is merely a dream for some moments. This would be clear to you only when you know yourself. Or just say "Why you are in the present status of life when there are many many people who are richer than you as well as poorer than you (lucky and unlucky). A boy who takes birth during evening dusk, would do harm to the world. A boy or girl who is delivered at time of sun rise would be a great human soul. To prove this, you should study the clear life, timing of experiences, his view of satisfaction and then only we can assess him a good man or a bad man. Some good man in our opinion may likely to be the worst man at some other parts of world or other time of life. No good nor bad on earth and all the lives are directly under the control of Allah - the one whom the scholars call in different names and the fools quarrel for the voice and spelling and wording. There is no individual who lived for long, The river is there always, but the water is replaced and as such you and me are always here but we change our body in different forms - may be\ human or dog or cat or lion or a tree or a grass during the span of the Universe. These results are based on what we do today. QUOTED BELOW:
It is said that "Reincarnation" is the cycle of death and rebirth into a new physical bodies of different lives. (Even during sleep, we do not understand that we are sleeping, till awaken, but the body works healthily). Such a rebirth is called reincarnation.
The soul - the true self - remains the same, while the "vehicle" of the soul (physical body) meets the experience of changes. Death means nothing else but the loss of ONE vehicle the soul was using during its many reincarnations in a physical body. Incarnation in a physical body is controlled by the law of Karma (work / deeds). The family, time, place, social society and culture where a reincarnation takes place is decided by the individual Karma of a soul.
THIS MUCH OF MY KNOWLEDGE IS LOGICALLY AND RELIABLY PROVEN. (Each individual has direct connection with Allah and all relationship with friends and relatives and enemies is through HIM only.

First part:
To make flesh again. Re-enter into flesh.

http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=incarnati...
Second part:
All belief systems originate from nothing, and to nothing they return.
Like holographs, thought is a trick of particular perception. Holograph literally translates from Greek into English as "scratched/written entirely (by one) structure/person [from holos "whole" + graphein "to write/scratch"].
In the sense that all belief's are created by thought (brain): one instrument interpreted only by position one looks from.
Belief of reincarnation can only be a mental longing to achieve something which seems impossible to achieve (e.g. mental activity to avoid action) or something that one does not want to act to bring about now due to a fear of failing.
Re-incarnation is the excuse used to promote caste inequality, and also the excuse used for allowing oneself to be corrupted.
It is the opposite argument to: "do it, you only live once", which is as rash as re-incarnation is cowardly. Neither the thought patterns engendering rashness nor cowardliness come to involvement, if there is no personal image of want "hence no fear or desire". We have fears and desires, hence belief's, hence there is suffering and success.
You've all heard the reasonings before e.g.
Go fight, don't worry, if you die, you'll re-incarnate later.
You had an evil past life, God is punishing you, that's why you are poor, live with it now, and your next life will be better.
You've committed a great sin, you can't have what you want until your next life, don't bother trying.
All these kinds of arguments are designed to sway thought and hence will to act in a particular direction it would otherwise not go.
Direction creates thought bias and thought bias creates belief. Cause and effect.

No evil fate awaits him who treads the path of righteousness. Having reached the worlds where the righteous dwell, and having remained there for many years, he who has slipped from the path of spirituality will be born again in the family of the pure, benevolent and prosperous.
Or, he may be born in the family of the wise sages, though a birth like this is, indeed, very difficult to obtain. Then the experience acquired in his former life will revive, and with its help he will strive for perfection more eagerly than before.
Unconsciously he will return to the practices of his old life; so that he who tries to realise spiritual consciousness is certainly superior to one who only talks of it. Then after many lives, the student of spirituality, who earnestly strives, and whose sins are absolved, attains perfection and reaches the Supreme.
There are numerous planes of existence or Lokas/Worlds. Lokas can be described as worlds of different sets of vibration, each grosser or subtler than the others. Examples are Vishnu Loka, Christ/Shiva Loka and Brahma Loka. A departed soul leaves behind his physical body, and depending on the results of his past actions/karmas done on earth, goes to a different Loka with his subtle body. He lives there in his subtle body for an indefinite period of time, either enjoying or suffering according to his good or bad Karma. If he has not gained spiritual perfection he will be born again on earth to strive for perfection.
Only imperfect souls with impure minds haunted by unfulfilled desires reincarnate. Perfection of the soul is achieved through God-vision/enlightenment. If a person cannot purify his mind and get rid of the desires in one incarnation, he will be born again and again until he attains mental purity and God-Vision. A person attaining perfection through God-vision is never born again. He is called a liberated soul, or saint.
A person can be liberated even when living in this world. After death such a liberated soul either goes to a Loka where he enjoys the presence of God all the time, or he merges into God and becomes one with Him.

I believe the idea of reincarnation comes from observing how nature recycles the physical world and applying the same principle to religion.

Reincarnation should be understood clearly and distinct from transmigration. Transmigration is cyclic process when the soul in their designated stay within the earth's sphere is not able to get out of the cycle of births and deaths due to various Karmic deeds done on exercise of their free will and therefore, have to per force take many many births until it is in a position to cleanse itself of the impurities attached to it so that the joining back to the cosmic source is become possible. Incarnation on the other hand, is the pure Soul whom we call God or the formless form, manifest in the form of human beings directly on account of certain destinies or purpose in the larger design of the cosmos or to show the path to the human beings who are the beings in possession of consciousness who are capable of returning to their source by virtue of this quality, so that the larger cycles are not disrupted as the whole cosmos is interdependent. We may call them the Avtars. Reincarnation is when the same genetically recognized higher consciousness or Avtar takes birth again and again. Human being taking birth again as human being is not called as reincarnation but transmigration of Soul, though Human beings are capable of reaching levels of higher consciousness which is above what we call as monotheistic God. Human beings were living in a level of much higher consciousness and a society far far advanced than the modern, (to believe me, the modern society is not advanced society, it is advanced only in materialism, i.e. in the body which is discardable, while the real advancement is in the spirit part of the being.), did exist in the Sati Yuga, Treta Yuga and upto Dwapara Yuga. The present Yuga of Kali i.e. Kali Yuga the focus is on material or body or physics moving towards dissolution and destruction, inorder to form a new Sati yuga just as a tree living thousands of years dies away for its seed which is potentially containing another gigantic tree germinate and grow into branches and branches until again to die. In breath there is a cycle of respiration and expiration, in minutes there is a cycle, in days there is a cycle of rotation , in years there is a cycle of revolution, in Yugas there is a cycle, in Kalpa there is a cycle. Thus goes the cycles of Kala (Time) within which the larger paintings are drawn. It is Sanatana(eternal and endless), and to limit it to periods of religions and religious thoughts are Mooddhamathe attributes of foolish mind,
