Best way to store handbags/purses?

I have a decent sized walk-in-closet. This closet is full of tons of stuff. I am in the process of organizing/ cleaning it out. But i am stuck with my purses/handbags; i don't know how to store them nicely. I've tried putting them in my dresser drawers (which led to overstuffed, not-opening drawers), putting them on a shelf (which led to a disastrous mess every time i went to get one), and i've tried hanging them. NOTHING has worked.

So what are your ideas for storing purses/handbags?? I have nice built-in shelving in my closet. I've tried it, but i can try it again. It's just that everything keeps getting messy. I don't have the budget to afford those handbag holders that you hang in your closet. but IF anyone has tried those let me know how they worked out and if you liked/disliked them.

Please give any ideas you may have.

Thanks. and best answer will be chosen.
