Can I use this glycerin soap on my face?

I have a bar of French Milled Pure Soap, and it says it has coconut oil, almond oil, and glycerin. I have oily skin, and I've been breaking out a lot recently. Will this make my skin worse or better?

As owner of The Natural Bar Soap Company, and maker of our handcrafted soaps, I think I can help with this question!

French Milled soap is simply soap that has been allowed to harden and cure, and is then powdered, mixed with water until smooth, and re-molded. It isn't any better for your skin than ordinary natural soap. However, the ingredients in a natural soap are what make it different from others. Yours has coconut oil in it, which is one of the three most commonly used oils for artisan soapmaking (the other two are palm oil, and olive oil).

Coconut oil is a favorite because it creates hard bars with loads of bubbles, and has incredible cleaning ability. For people with normal to oily skin, this is great! Coconut oil soaps can power through greasy oils, and remove dirt and impurities that are trapped underneath. However, a soap with ONLY coconut oil can actually be TOO drying, so other oils are added to balance the bar. In your case, almond oil was used. Almond oil and olive oil are both very conditioning, and are commonly seen blended with coconut oil in natural soaps.

Glycerin is another ingredient in your soap that is particularly good for skin. Soap is made by combining oils with lye and water. The chemical reaction that occurs not only creates soap, but also glycerin. That's really a great thing, because glycerin is nature's best moisturizer. It is a "humectant," meaning that it draws moisture to itself. When used on your skin, it draws moisture to you, cutting down on dry, ashy-looking skin.

People with acne (myself included!) often have issues with being oily. To take care of that, many people resort to overly drying cleaning regimines- washing too often, with water that is too hot, with too many products. That all leads to dryness, which can actually make acne worse! People with acne generally produce more oil than people without acne. That oil needs to be able to get through our skin where it can be cleaned away. If skin is dry, pores aren't soft and stretchy, oils get trapped, and acne cysts (those ouchy red bumps) develop. So, it's important for your skin to stay moisturized- but NOT with synthetic moisturizers such as parabens, waxes and petroleum based things like mineral oil. These ingredients are found in many over the counter lotions and moisturizers. Read the labels, and avoid them!

Glycerin is so valuable of a moisturizer, that commercial soap companies will often remove the naturally occuring glycerin from their bars, and sell it to other industries for profit. Then, they add synthetic moisturizers in its place. This is not good for your skin. Your skin needs all the natural conditioning it can get, to stay nice and soft so that oil doesn't get trapped so easily.

To sum up, I think your bar of natural soap is fabulous for your skin. There are few products that will "cure" acne. That's why so many people are always looking for the magic cure, and why so many products exist that claim to treat it. Most people eventually grow out of it, but some of us have issues for life. From experience, I know that using mild soaps made with natural ingredients that rinse clean, don't overly cleanse, and naturally moisturize are best for my skin. Some people claim that Tea Tree Essential Oil helps as well. Anyone claiming that it is a "cure" is wrong. If it was, it would be easily available, and sold inexpensively in grocery stores. It certainly helps with the inflammation, infection and oiliness that can be associated with acne, though. You may want to try some out for particularly bad flare ups. Or, try a soap that has some in it for a bit of "routine" care.

Two more ingredients you may want to look for are Allantoin and Alezaic Acid. They are extracted from plants (comfrey and wheat), and are known as "keratolytics." They soften keratin, which is one of the main components of skin. Again, they're just more ingredients aimed at keeping your skin soft and moist, rather than tight and dry.

I hope I wrote something useful for you!

Dry and/or greasy skin due to poor oil composition of the skin. Thick greasy oils clog pores, lack of oil leads to dryness and irritation. You need thin oils to moisturize while dissolving and clearing gunk in your poors. Try fish oil or seafood. 2 tsp fish oil a day or 4 servings of seafood a week. Stick it out for at least 2 months; it will take a long time to replace all your oil. Any effect after 1-2 days is temporary or random; so even if it makes you break out a little at first, you haven't given it a full try yet.

In the short term you can wash and moisturize well, but that will only go so far. Plus excessive washing can be drying and excessive moisturizing can be clogging. Use a small amount of a light moisturizer, made with oil not jelly or grease. Often that means soybean oil or mineral oil. Mineral oil means mined from the ground. So soybean oil is usually better, though mineral oil won't cause too much harm. Clean with soap and water, not a harsh acne cleanser. Even then they only work so well. So you really need the seafood.

Antibiotics aren't really good for bacteria long term, they'll come back in force after. Short term they may help. After you get off them find some kefir with acidophilus listed first or 2nd to replace the friendly bacteria they destroyed. Studies show less illness when you have these bacteria, even outside the stomach in places such as the lungs and elsewhere. You want friendly bacteria to fill the void when the antibiotics stop, not harmful ones.

In the short term you might also try 100,000+ iu retinol vitamin A (a megadose, and too much for normal use) or one of the acne drugs that is similar to retinol vitamin A. It's some minor harm to your organs, but it helps against bacteria on your skin. At least it doesn't have the other long term drawbacks to your skin that antibiotics and many scrubs do.

If you would like to learn how to treat your acne permanently and regain your health and wellbeing, without drugs, without typical acne treatments, and without any side effects, then this will be the most important letter you will ever read.

Use whatever works for you, but glycerin is basically fat. It may help with dry skin, but it won't cure acne. Only a prescription or acne wash can help with that. If you have oily skin that you think may be contributing to your acne, you should probably use a soap without glycerin, or like I said something that specifically says it treats acne. I agree that you should only be washing your face maybe twice a day at most. Cleansing your skin more than twice a day can trigger a panic response and send your oil glands into overdrive. Never wash your face with hot or cold water (both can cause broken capillaries) Try lukewarm instead. Be careful of cleansers with alcohol which will strip skin of its essential oils. Skin that feels taut and tight after cleansing is a clear sign that you may be overcleansing or using too harsh a cleanser for your skin type

if that is the full ingredients list, that sounds like an okay soap to use. The best soap to use on your fact would be one that only has:

moisturizing oils like coconut, almond, olive

essential oils that benefit your skin condition such as tea tree oil (not necessary though)

sodium hydroxide (sometimes will be listed in the ingredients list) it is necessary for soap to be made

but, NOT ADDED GLYCERIN (it wont do A LOT of harm, but preferably don't use it if you can)

it's great that you are looking to use good quality soap on your skin. it works much better than other liquid cleansers out there, even if they are all natural products. Stick with it for a few months and you will find your skin looking so much better.

One great soap out there that should be easy to find is Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree Pure Castile soap BAR. it has tea tree oil to help fight acne and the bar soap is great for cleansing.
