what is the purpose of life?

Not in the sense "be good to your next of kin", but as in why does it appear at all? At least it has happened here on earth, and may/may not be found on exoplanets, but still it seems like a waste, if it's nothing more than bacteria on random cogs of the universal clockwork. Has anyone any philosophies and/or theories on the subject?

    what separates life from non-life?

the use of energy and self-replication...

chemical processes use energy, but aren't really replicating

life is essentially a snowball chemical reaction, capable of self replication

we're an interesting chemical reaction, to say the least, bound by the laws of survival and evolution

"Has anyone any philosophies and/or theories on the subject?"

Probably not too much more than about several bazillionty-quintillion or so. Most of them come after a couple hours of drinking, so may not be terribly coherent, but even the most tightly-reasoned ones are pretty vague.

Anyway, before you get to that question, you really should take a stab at answering this one: What's the purpose of anything?

I haven't got a good answer for that, so I'm a long way from having any sort of answer for yours. Maybe some wise person has the private phone number to the Supreme Being (Sir Ian McKellen) and can give you a more definitive answer.

There is no purpose of life. That should be obvious.
