HELP! Does bellydancing make your hips and lower back bigger?
I just started bellydancing on the fit tv program Shimmy. I've only done it 3 times but today my lower back hurts really bad because I think i'm not used to using my hips so much. Will bellydancing make my hips and lower back bigger? I really don't want it to, I just wanted some fun exercise. Help!!!!

Hi!
No, Bellydancing will tone up some spare inches around your waist and tummy (if you have any!), but it won't make your hips or lower back bigger.
Bellydance is not a high impact exercise and mostly uses muscles consistently and in a more controlled manner than, say, running. This means extra muscle isn't generally made (unless you do it a LOT...like 14 hours week), it just strengthens what's already there.
In fact you may lose an inch or so off your hips and lower back! (I always notice my waist and lower abdomen get smaller if I Bellydance a lot)
I've been dancing for 13 years now, so hopefully this is helpful for you :)
Thanks!

No.
Your lower back hurts because you need to be certain to use proper dance posture. Keep your abs contracted and your pelvis tilted slightly under. Do not push your tush out far for any move. Keep moves small until you develop good techniques. Maybe take a class so you can get feedback from an instructor so as not to cause injury.
Please be careful causing any compression to your spine, which is what I'm suspicious you have done. Never ever arch your back for any move - even if they tell you to do so on the show. They can't watch to make sure you have good technique.

Wouldn't have thought so, maybe your hips will appear more defined as your tummy/waistline would tone up - your back is probably aching a bit from this as it is a form of exercise ( I've heard it's really good fun as well )
Shimmy away and enjoy :)
