Americans living in Canada?
Hi, My boyfriend and I have been together for about 3 years and we've reached the point of wanting to live together. I live in Canada and he lives in the States. I was just curious as to how he would move here. The CIC website is straight forward but doesn't go into detail. He's not a skilled worker, and he's not exactly ready to attend College, so how else could he come here? Can Americans just not re-locate into Canada? They make it seem as if you HAVE to be done College and/or wanting to attend instantly. Any information would be amazing.
We wanted to try and do this sooner than later, as the distance is getting harder and harder and we're wanting and needing to be with eachother more & more.
Thanks.

You don't necessarily need college - in fact, a good trade will stand you in better stead. Have you considered getting married? It's a lot easier to sponsor a spouse than a boyfriend.

Americans cannot just relocate into Canada, just as Canadians cannot just relocate in to the USA, even though the ancestors of some Americans may have been Canadian (and vice-versa). People moving into another country have to follow the rules (though there are those who circumvent the rules).
If both are truly serious, he might get into Canada sooner if you are married to eachother. He could apprentice to a trade -- Canada needs more skilled tradesmen.
Otherwise, I can't offer you any other advice.

Allen has it just about spot on, the only thing that I would add is that you CAN use a credit card as long as the first 4 digits signify that it is a Canadian bank. Funny thing is that my credit card is drawn on an American bank (Citi Bank) BUT it is through its Canadian subsidiary and there were no problems. What we do is bring a couple of hundred dollars CDN for tips and sundries and if we go on an excursion we pay for it with the card. So far no problems. A word of caution about Cuban customs it can be quite intimidating (at least it was for us in Varadero) just give them your documents and they will give you back what they don't need. You will need to pay the departure tax at the airport BEFORE you leave Cuba which should be about 25 CUC and lastly bring a Timmies mug to keep your drinks cool at the resort. have a good time and safe home.

They can just come to Canada if they want however the longest they can stay without a visa is 6 months. After that they are here illegally. Regardless of how long they are here for (longer or shorter then 6 months) they will not be allowed (or be able) to work as they will not have a SIN number, they will not qualify for our medical coverage and they will not be able to attend school without a student visa. Your best bet is to contact someone with CIC directly and ask them. Better yet, have him do that through the Canadian Embassy or Consulate nearest him.

if he has no skills to come as a skilled worker and doesn't want to come as an international student his only option is marriage, you would have to qualify to sponsor him on a spouse visa.
No Americans can not just relocate to Canada and nor can a Canadian just relocate to america, one of you must go through the immigration process of the country you both choose to live in

If he has nothing to offer the country and you can't support him, then yeah, moving here will not be easy. However he can learn a skilled trade i.e. being a plumber or carpenter; then he'd be more than welcome seeing as the country's in shortage of these (and he'll make good money as well) :o)

You'd probably have to get married and then you both become dual citzens. Otherwise he could apply for working class immigrant. If he has any relatives in Canada, they could sponser him as a family class immigrant. Or he could get a work Visa if a company sponsers him. Also, I know that Canadians can live in the US for 90 days (3 months) before they have to leave, so you can go spend some time to see if you want to live together. For a Canadian immigrating into the US, it's very difficult.
