Online meal resources for diabetics?
After much tracking, testing and observation my doctor recently diagnosed me with type 2 diabetes. The numbers don't lie unfortunately.
Now, I'm 50 and overweight so of course the first things I need to work on are exercise and diet. Exercise is simple enough for me to wrap my brain around but diet for a diabetic may as well be rocket science for me. Calories vs good carbs vs bad carbs...oops, watch cholesterol now. Careful or salts will get you.
I've been looking around online for easy to understand diet info for type 2 diabetics but I'm stumped. Its all so confusing to me. I'd really appreciate any assistance with simple and easy to understand diet and nutrition info for pers in my situation.
10 AnswersDiabetes7 years agoHow does a portable mortgage work?
From what I understand a portable mortgage means if I move, and there is time left on the mortgage term, I can take the mortgage with me to my new home...after I pay off what is owing on the first home.
What I dont understand though is how much. Lets say I started out with a $180,000 mortgage and I pay down $30,000 before I want/need to move. Assuming I sell my home for $180,000 and put $150,000 on the old house...do I now take that $180,000 mortgage and its terms with me for a new house or do I only have the remaining $150,000?
I'd like to eventually be in a situation where I can use the original $180,000 amount AND the profit/equity from the old house to get something better. How would a portable mortgage work?
1 AnswerRenting & Real Estate7 years agoLooking to buy silver, but confused?
I've always beein interested in picking up some silver and/or gold as my finances allow but I'm a little confused.
I notice I can go to a bank or precious metals dealer and get, for example, a 1 oz silver bar for just over the current rate by the time you factor in extra costs . I've also noted from various online videos that lots of people prefer to buy fine silver coins but these coins can cost up to 50% (or more) in price. On the one hand the higher price makes sense because you are not just buying a small bar of silver but you are buying a coin, a work of art per se.
Given the fact that both items contain the same amount and purity of silver, wouldn't it make more financial sense to just spend the money on the bar form? Of course the same scenerio applies to gold bars and coins as well.

Or perhaps I should label this "the difference between Canadian cops and American cops". (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada)

4 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoIs all the upheaval and ill feelings worth it?
I see today that only slightly more then 106,000 Americans have been able to sign up for the ACA coverage. Many times more then that have been told they are losing their current coverage and many more are angered by the entire issue.
I can't help but wonder if it's all been worth it and how the President can view it all as a success? Its such a dismal failure so is there any turning back or will the nation just have to bash on and try to come out the other end of the process with as little damage as possible.
3 AnswersOther - Politics & Government8 years agoWhy the red armbands?
I PVR'd the broadcast of the national Remembrance Day parade in Ottawa today and I watched it when i got home from my local parade. I noted a number of spectators wearing red armbands as well as poppies. Any idea what that was about? I'm not passing judgement, just curious.
1 AnswerOttawa8 years agoHow do I get my A+ certification?
I currently work in an IT related area with my employer and have been doing so for years. New management has come in and they want to see each of us have our A+ cert done.
I know it involves some study and testing and I'm not overly concerned. I'll just work through the process. I'm curious what the process is though. Is it sonething I need to do online, through my local community/tech college or through a specialized IT school of some sort? I'm looking for insight specific to Canada as well too...if that makes a difference.
Thanks
3 AnswersOther - Computers8 years agoPrior internet domain registration info?
I was checking on a domain name that I wanted to register and when I did a "whois" it shows as available. I know at one time though it was registered (around 2007 or so) and I am wondering if there is any place I can check that would give me the info as to who had it registered before? I tried archive.org (the WayBack Machine) but that didn't help. Any other place I could check to see who had it registered before.

3 AnswersHalifax8 years agoTreaty on Open Skies?
At this time there is a Russian military flight currently crossing Canada taking photos of what ever the Russians want, including government installations and military bases. This is done under the provisions of the international Treaty on Open Skies.
The treaty is designed to enhance mutual understanding and confidence by giving all participants, regardless of size, a direct role in gathering information from other participating states about military forces and activities of concern to them. As such, this agreement promotes openness and transparency of military forces and activities among the members.
Since the US is also a member of this treaty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_Open_Skies ) that also means that each year there is a Russian military flight crisscrossing the US taking aerial photos of what ever the the Russians want under the authority of this treaty. Of course, US officials are also on the flights and the US also has the right for reciprocal flights but I'm still left wondering how the average American feels about this.
1 AnswerOther - Politics & Government8 years agoNew York Airport Parking?
I'm looking to take my family on a cruise out of Manhattan. We are a good days drive from NYC but there are 8 of us and we can't all drive in our 7 passenger van. (Yes, some will say to just do it but I won't take the chance). What I thought we'd consider is flying my wife and our youngest and the rest of us can drive in and meet up.
What I'm looking for is an idea for long term parking near Leguardia airport. We'd have the van parked there for 8 days and would like it to be secure parking. Well, as secure as long term parking can ever be.
Any ideas or suggestions?
1 AnswerNew York City8 years agoHow to buy small amounts of gold bullion?
When anyone conducts an online search they can find thousands of websites for companies (of various levels of credibility) that will buy your old gold and silver but how does someone go about finding a place to buy gold/silver?
I'm not looking to buy online but I would like to know what types of places will sell gold to customers. I have read that its best to avoid gold coins because you end up paying more then the gold is worth because of the "artistry" involved in making the coins. Same for simple jewelry. I'd just like to be able to buy an oz or less as my budget allows.

2 AnswersInvesting8 years agoNow that the Pope has resigned?
I'm just wondering if he will still continue to wear the Papal ring he has been wearing since he was installed? I know he is dispensing with many of the other trappings and that he intends to go into seclusion for prayer and study but I was just curious about his traditional ring. Anyone have any ideas?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality8 years agoIs there a simple to follow diabetic diet and general info site out there?
A few months ago my doctor told me that with my fasting blood sugar at 6.5-7 I now meet the definition of someone who is diabetic. I'm still young at 49, with no history in my family of diabetes and I started out weighing 266 but in the last 4 months I've managed to lose 20 lbs meaning I'm now down to around 245 lbs. As a 6'1" male I know I can still lose some more and I am working towards that.
Now, while I know it's not as high as some peoples I do know it needs to be lower. I've cut out sodas, sugars in things like coffee and cereals and any obvious source I can find it but I know that there are other dietary changes I need to make. The doctor wants me to give that a try before we look at any other form of intervention.
I've been to see a dietitian but I feel lost and overwhelmed by it all. One thing I did take away from my meetings with her is that there are foods I can use to help regulate my sugar and there are sources of sugars that are not obvious but can be troubling. Can someone please direct me to a site that would lay out some of the dietary issues and steps I can take to help lower my blood sugar? There must be an easy to read and follow site for simple folk like me. lol
Thanks so much
5 AnswersDiabetes8 years agoGood Cruise Line rating site?
My wife and I have finely decided we will take a cruise. Given our location we are looking at leaving from New York or New Jersey but we may consider one of the Florida departure sites as well. What that means is we are limited pretty much to Norwegian Cruise Lines, Carnival Cruise Lines and/or Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines it seems. If anyone knows of any others, please let me know.
Anyway, I've been doing some checking online about passengers past experiences and I really get conflicting info. I don't know if some people are just overly critical or if the sites I was on can be trusted to provide realistic reviews. I'm to the point now where I am wondering if it's even worth the risk.
I'm wondering if anyone has an insight on a reliable site for cruise reviews. cruisecritic.com is what I had looked at already but maybe I should have just not bothered to check in the first place.
4 AnswersCruise Travel8 years agoDisney World, outside resort shuttle busses?
My wife and I are taking the kids down to Disney World in the fall. We have been there before so we know what we are going into with the exception of one area that just came to mind today.
We will be having a rental van so I know we can drive there and park for the day like we did last time. Not a problem. The "problem" gets to be that we have a large family with 6 kids and there may be a day where my wife and the older kids want to go while I stay at the condo with the younger kids. My wife does not think she would be comfortable driving and we were just wondering if anyone is aware of a shuttle bus service that makes the rounds to resorts and such outside of Disney and will take people to the parks?
We are not 100% settled on where we may stay so if there is such a service we could look at adjusting where we stay but every time I do a search on "shuttle bus, Disney, Orlando" or anything like that, I only get the Disney shuttles that run for Disney resorts. Any private services out there that anyone is aware of?
Much thanks
4 AnswersOrlando8 years agoChoppy video playback with Adobe?
I've had very choppy video playback on my computer for the longest time but only with sites and services that use Adobe Flash Player such as YouTube. It seems to have been a problem for the last year or so with the various upgrades of Flash but Adobe never seems to get it fixed.
I was using Adobe Flash ver 11. something and the only way I could address this was to uninstall it and go all the way back to one of the ver 10.0 builds. I now have great playback but every time I go to a site with Adobe Flash it tells me my version is out of date so I just "allow" it and carry on.
Has anyone else been able to figure out what is going wrong with Adobe Flash and how you can run the latest version and still get good video playback? It seems to be an Adobe problem but perhaps I have missed something and my Adobe can be upgraded provided I upgrade something else. Nothing on the Adobe website seems to talk about this problem but it's all over other forums.
Any suggestions?
1 AnswerYouTube8 years agoVacation condos for a large family near Disneyworld (FL)?
I've got a family of 8 (2 adults and 6 kids) and we are planning on hitting Orlando area for two weeks in Sept/Oct. Last time we went down we stayed at the Gran Bahama Resort in a 3 bedroom condo. Nice and close to Disney and anything else we wanted to do/see.
For this next trip we have no problems booking the same place but I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions for 3-4 bedroom condos big enough to handle a family of 8. We'd naturally like to remain central to Disney, Seaworld and those kinds of places.
Any suggestions of where to look at?
