The people who are homeless in NYC streets do you think it's their fault that they're in that situation?

Read details: I don't think it's their fault but my main question is

1. Don't these homeless people have family? I mean there's got to be someone out there who is related to them.

2. Why don't they contact their families to help them? Some of them are so old I assume they've had kids etc

3. Also don't they have shelters for homeless people in NYC? I thought I read that somewhere in some article

4. Do you think it's their fault they're in that situation

I just don't really understand. When I went to NYC I saw like two of them. I didn't give them anything since I don't carry cash. Even if I carried cash for some reason I have a feeling I would just pass by since everyone in front of me were passing by without doing anything.

That's a complicated question. Im sure some made some bad mistakes to end up on the street - like drugs, alcohol..etc. But Im sure there are some who just "never got a hand up" in life. Maybe they aged out of Foster care and couldn't get a job. Maybe they dont have family or friend to call on for help - not everyone is so lucky-and those of us who are, should be thankful. And you can't get a job if you have no home, no phone, clean buisness cloths to go on the interview for.

And the shelters? I really don't think there are enough shelters to house every homeless person in the city.

I knew this kid, he was 18yrs old and working at this resturant as a busbuy and had a 2nd job at a local store. They found out he was living in the stairwell of the resort next to the resturant - later he told us his dad's new wife made his father kick him out since he had graduated high school. When the manager of the hotel found out, she made his boss fire him because the resturant was on the hotel property. This kid was really trying to get his life together, he was working 2 jobs trying to save up to get his own place. And it seemed like what ever could go wrong for him - did go wrong. I lost contact with him a while back, so I don't even know how he is doing now.

    1. Families vary, and just because they have family doesn't mean that they're accepted by them. Life's rough and some people can't live with each other. Add in a mental illness and you're out on the street for some.

    2. Same as above. I know a guy who had had two wives and one kid, At first i felt bad, but then i realised he had some sort of social disorder, and it was clear why no one wanted to be around him. Not sure if he needs some serious meds or what, it seemed to be who he was. He had been homeless for a bit.

    3. I heard that there was a big fiasco with the liberals releasing the homeless, thinking they were better off. I have no first hand knowledge.

    4. Kind of...It's a result of who they are. But who they are is not always a result from their choices. So it depends on how much you're ready to blame someone.

A lot of the time they were people who thought they'd move to New York and strike it big, I've lived here all my life but I haven't made it big. A lot of times they gave in to drugs and alcohol.

1.-2. They may not want their families help, their family disowned them, they have none, they ran away, or no longer communicate with them.

    3. There are a TON but there are more homeless people then homeless shelters, and some choose not to go sometimes.

    4. Maybe, maybe not. A lot of the time they were messing with the wrong things, or thought they'd run here and strike it big. (which is not smart, here is expensive (even milk isn't cheap))

1.Well some of them have family but their family chooses not to take them in or does not have enough room for them. Some of the homeless are too prideful to go to family for help and figure that they are better off homeless.

2.As I said before, some are too prideful to do so.Some do not get along with the family they have left.

3.Most likely but shelters have rules. Some of the rules they have in the shelters, the homeless do not want to abide by.I'm not sure what those rules are exactly but I know that the shelters that I know of(I live in a different state.)have rules,at least from what I have heard. They have to do chores and they feel they have more freedom on the streets.Again, some feel like they are lowering themselves if they go to a shelter.

4.No,I don't think so unless they choose 100% not to work or if they don't want to make the situation better.

It depends on how you look at it.

You never really know. Some people here who are homeless are on drugs. Some have serious mental problems. Others are simply down on their luck in a major way. Sometimes shelters are worst than the streets because with shelters people there are raped, assaulted, robbed, etc.

Alot of them have mental problems or drug and alcohol problems and cannot stay in a shelter with these problems as they could risk the safety of the innocent in these shelters...Some cannot get aid because they don't have an address...Some cannot help their circumstances and want better and have NO ONE that really gives a darn...Laugh and the world laughs with you...Cry and you cry alone.

Sometimes, their situation is beyond their control, and if they've lost all of their family members, then they have nobody. You can't really tell just by passing them on the street what they've been through, so we should never assume things about them.

I don't live in NYC. So, I wouldn't know. But I do know about the homeless in D.C. Well Idk, but when I go through there I see them.

    1. Idk if they have families. Just because there blood doesn't neccessarily mean there "family". (Know someone).

    2. No phone perhaps? Maybe they don't wanna embarress there kids?

    3. They should.

    4. I think everythong is made by choice. So, I guess so or they had no choice.

partially, but i try not to judge people who r down on their luck. some of them don't have families and some r mentally unstable. i feel bad for them and hope that they can pick themselves up and better their lives. don't judge, it's not your place, it's god's
