To learn how to cook, I'd recommend just starting trying stuff and seeing what happens. Making really great food can be hard, but making perfectly OK food isn't that difficult. If it turns out bad you can always just make a sandwich.

    Here's a good easy one:

Start cooking some pasta according to the box directions. A minute or two before it's done, add in some veggies - broccoli florets, baby spinach, frozen chopped bell peppers, whatever. Drain, drizzle on some good olive oil (or put a pat of butter in and stir it around until the butter melts), and add some salt, pepper, and grated cheese. For added protein put in a can of tuna or a chopped hardboiled egg or something. Worst-case scenario it turns out a little weird, but it'll still be edible and you'll learn by trial and error what works and what doesn't.

Once that's mastered, start making friends with the Amazing Mr. Onion.

Sauteed onion is the start to almost everything I cook, personally. Add chopped fresh vegetables and stir them around - if they're thick or difficult you may need to add a little water and a lid for a while. Stir, taste, add salt and pepper. Eat straight, on top of pasta or toast, or as the filling in an omnomnomelet. http://www.ehow.com/how_13824_make-basic-omelet.ht...

Once you've got a few basic techniques down you'll find all sorts of other options opening up. Have fun!

Probably the most through explanation of how to make a dish is at the "cooking for engineers" website. The recipes are usually illustrated, and if there is a problem with the recipe you will read the problem and how to correct it. When you get to the home page select recipe file.

read cookbooks or recipe websites. the more recipes you read the easier it will be to try some of them.

easy to start is http://www.bettycrocker.com/ most of the recipes are very simple and use mixes as base. step by step is the general rule.

http://www.recipezaar.com/ has easy recipes and very detailed step by step instructions.

step 1 in cooking anything is to read through the recipe. collect the ingredients into one place. collect the cooking utensils needed. turn on the oven to proper temperature if it is to be baked. Then just follow the instructions.
