Is this too much for siblings?

My Hubby's family has many Johns in it, one of which is his grandfather and he would like to name one of our sons after, which we decided on the name Johnathan, so it would be slightly different. The problem come in that now my hubby is taking a liking to having a "junior", which I like too, but since his name is Ian a derivative of John I don't think we should use both, but he doesn't think it would be a problem. What do you think?

I don't need to know how popular or boring the name John is, I know that. I am just curious about using John and Ian for siblings, because I think that might be a bit much.

Thanks.

Ian is a derivative of John? That's news to me. Having sons called John and Ian doesn't sound too much, I think they're both nice names. Now if they were Jack and John it would be dumb but I think your names sound fine.

  • No, until you said that Ian comes from John, which I've never heard before..and don't know where you heard that, but to me Ian and John sound nothing alike.

oh and I love the name Ian! and John too but Ian is one of my favorites!!

I abhor the idea of Juniors. I think that kids should have their own identity and saddling the son with the fathers name b/c he feels the need to mark his territory and throw his name all over him is just not fair to the child. Your son is already getting his last name. Why do you need to now also give your son his girst name of Ian? I don't get the appeal plus.. who are you in this equation? Why is your son not being named after you or a name from your family? If you use Jonathan b/c it's a family name on your husbands side, make sure you get the middle name from something on your side or in honor of you. You count too.

I vote Jonathan. Don't name him Ian.. let your kid be his own person so no, I don't like Ian and Jonathan as siblings especially since BOTH kids would be named after your husband again asking the question, why are you not a factor here? Why are you less important that one can't be named after you?

John and Ian are cute for siblings. If you name him that and still think it's too much, Jack would be a good nickname for John.

John and Ian for siblings is perfectly fine. I think they sound good together. Both names are short, sweet and masculine. They sound good together.

Hope this helps. Good luck! =)

i dont think its too much at all! if you like those ideas go ahead, and if i am perfectly honest... i never knew ian and john were from the same roots! nobody will think anything of it and i think they are both nice respectful names, not too unique or made up or anything :)
