I live in Southern California, and I would definitely recommend vacationing there. You can visit the mountains, beach, and desert in one day if you wanted to. Not to mention, the beautiful weather we have out here.
If that is your thing, visit Disneyland or the other vast amount of amusement parks we have here. Visit Hollywood, Universal Studios, and Santa Monica Pier =)
As far as the people, I think CA has the most diverse group of people in the world.

Ummmm the person who had nothing but negatives to say is an idiot. Sorry, I don't mean to be mean. I live in Canada and I'm pretty offended. Moving on.. For a 17 year old you will find lots of fun things to do in Niagara Falls. They have lots of fun tourist-y stuff, like wax museums, rides, haunted houses and ferry trips around the falls. Toronto (where I live) is also a great city. You can go see the CN Tower, Casa Loma (a beautiful historic castle) and a million other things. Shopping is really good here too! I would wait to go to Montreal until you are 18, then you'll be of legal age to drink! Montreal is a beautiful historic city. If in doubt, check tourism sites and find which city has the most things you find interesting, and don't let anyone tell you Canada sucks.

I highly recommend you visit California. You can visit the local mountains, or the deserts, or the beach of cities such as Santa Monica, Hollywood, etc and there are a LOT of places to visit here.
If you're going for the more outdoor type adventure you can still visit the Sierra Nevada in California and Yosemite/Sequoia/Kings Canyon national parks or go to Canada, where you can obviously find a lot of wilderness.

Well, I live in California, so I know quite a bit about it. There are many sights to see, many people, lot's of things to do. You could go to the beach, to Disneyland, Hollywood, etc. California has nice weather and the people are nice I guess. And if you decide to go to California, I suggest the Southern area, around Los Angeles. Hope This Helps

I've lived in both places.
Canada is a big country. You can find very nice small town people and also rude city folk. Same with California.
What do you like to do? If you want to camp or hang out by a lake, nothern Ontario or the Okanogan valley in BC would be good. If you like cities Toronto is amazing and Vancouver and Montreal are also nice. San Francisco is a great city. Los Angeles has disney land and tv shows and stuff.

Both are great. Depends on WHERE in Canada and WHERE in California you are talking about.
Why not do both? A few days in some place like Vancouver and then some days in some place like San Francisco? You would love it.
