why is it a penalty when a player tries to play on after held is called?

Its so stupid, just make them go back to the mark and play the ball? It must be hard to hear the call sometimes when there is a big crowd.

When its simultaneous - you are 100% - just get them to go back and play it!

The refs are penalising for stupid reasons. Its like when the ball hits the ref - neither the attacking or defending team should be penalised (unless its deliberate)

In a Tigers match about 3 weeks ago the ref didnt call "Held" he called out "Play it" - so Ellis played on and we got a penalty against us!!

    Refs + judiciary = joke

    Makes sense what you say.

But the more ridiculious rule in the game is the stripping one

It should be the responsibility of the ball carrier to keep the ball

Too many penalties given in debatable circumstances

The players know the rules as well as the referees do. They should know when the tackle is effected. What is annoying is seeing players walk three, four or five metres past the mark before playing it. This should be a penalty.

Its beyond me mate. What norseman said is true too. It would seem they pick n' choose when to enforce certain rules.
