If I supplement my breastmilk with another kind of milk/formula, will I dry up?
My midwife told me this was true of formula because it makes babies fuller and they want more and more formula and less and less breastmilk. But I don't want my baby to completely stop breastfeeding. So I thought I would ask other moms. I'd like to substitute milk maybe half the time. If I do this, will I dry up?
I want to supplement part of the time because it is too draining on me to do it constantly. I have a low thyroid and very little energy to begin with. Breastfeeding makes it even harder and I need all the energy I can get to take care of my baby.
My baby is almost 4 months old.

It depends on how much you continue to nurse. If you have a well established supply, 1-2 bottles a day shouldn't be a problem, but 50-50 is asking for trouble.
Have you gotten treatment for your thyroid problem? Treatment is 100% compatable with nursing and would make you feel better AND probably help your supply.
Remember too that however you feed your baby, caring for a baby will be tiring. Mixing and washing bottles and getting up at 2 a.m. to walk to the kitchen to warm a bottle isn't necessarily 'easier' than rolling over and latching your baby on, or cuddling her at the breast while you chat on the phone or watch tv.

It depends on how old the baby is and how established the breastfeeding is. Early on, you should try not to give formula unless you pump at every feeding when the baby gets the bottle. Otherwise your breasts could think the baby is weaning and dry up. BUT, if the baby is over three months and you have maintained breastfeeding fine up until now, supplementing with formula should be totally fine. Your breasts will adjust to when the baby nurses and when they need to make milk. It is no different then when you start solids with the baby, the breasts get used to when they are going to be "used" and when they are getting a break. You will not dry up if you have regular feedings.

Yes you will. Not right away but slowly you will make less and less milk and your baby will only receive formula. It might be true that it makes babies fuller, but it is NOT breast milk. You only get to breastfeed for a short amount of time in your life, why only do it part time?

Some Drs or others will try to steer you away from formula, even if your baby is crying from hunger. If your baby continues to cry after feeding like they are hungry, try feeding some formula and see if they quit.
If so, they aren't getting enough breast milk. You do not want to starve your baby trying to breast feed when formula is readily available today. Good luck.

As long as you keep pumping, pumping, pumping you should be fine. Even when your baby has a formula feed, you should pump to keep your supply going. The less you feed the less you will produce.
