hawaii snorkeling options?

I am looking for a snorkeling option on the Big Island of Hawaii (Kona side) that has an "inexperienced" snorkeler option. I believe I found a website at one time where the masks were built into some kind of float. Any suggestions?

Take any of the snorkeling tours where you go out on a boat to the snorkeling site. You do not need to have any experience. The tour operator will provide everything you need including various types of flotation devices. You don't even have to be a good swimmer. It is very easy to do and there will be people of all skill levels on the boat with you. Most of the people on the tour will use some kind of flotation device. This is very common. Wear plenty of sun screen. A lot of people will wear a tee shirt in the water, because the sun will burn your back while you float around for hours looking at all the fish. Of course you can always get out of the water anytime you want and relax on the boat, but you will be having too much fun in the water for that. Relax and enjoy your snorkeling adventure. It will be lots of fun.

You may be referring to "snuba", which is a blending of snorkeling and scuba diving. Where in snorkeling you are breathing thru a short tube, which fills with water if you go deeper than the tube length, which is only 4-6" above your head...so, you have to remember to BLOW OUT when you come up, before taking a breath, or you will suck in all the water that has filled the tube. Not good.

With snuba diving, you breath from a hose that is connected to a float which gives you more freedom to dive under water while still being able to breath surface air. No tanks or certification required as you would need for scuba diving. Hence the name "snuba".

In the Kailua-Kona area there are several options for snorkeling, including just renting the equipment and going to spots along the shore where you can simply walk in and snorkel whereever you are comfortable, including at depths you can simply stand up if you get nervous. It will only take you a few minutes to get the hang of it and before you know it, you'll be venturing into deeper water...chasing after one fish or another.

Probably the easiest place for a beginner snorkeler in Kailua would be to snorkel right there in Kailua Bay. There's a small bay to the right of the pier in front of the Kamehameha Kona Inn Hotel, probably the calmest, most protected area to start off in.

A popular snorkeling beach, not too far away is down Ali'i Drive, Kahalu'u Beach Park. Nice beach, but stay to the left and away from the right hand side where the rip tide can be pretty bad at times.

About 100' out is a wall that attracks a lot of fish, so once you're comfortable snorkeling, you might venture out and enjoy swimming with the fish. Just remember, BLOW OUT before you suck in, if you dive under! lol
