Are art teachers in demand for k-12?
Hi. I am currently a student at a four year University and my current major is a BFA in Computer Animation. I love computer arts. I have two more years left and I have been thinking about changing my major to studio arts with an education minor so that I can teach. I want to teach just as much as I want a career in computer animation, but computer animation is hard to break into for starters, you do not need a degree for that field (just a demo reel and portfolio), and I'm worried about job security. When I first transferred to this school my major was English because I wanted to teach at a secondary level. Then I realized that they had computer animation as a major which was my major for about 5 years but changed it because I could not afford to go to an art school and it is rare at public universities. So I basically want to know if art teachers are in demand. Because if they are not in demand, then I will not change my major if my job outlook is the same. I also plan on getting my masters strait away in Art History because my dream job is to teach at a community college. Thank you for your responses!

Not really. Art is probably the most easily disposable thing by a school in times of budget cuts because art generally does not bring any attention or money to the schools; unlike sports or music. This goes for K-12, community colleges, and also universities.
Art, history, and English are probably the hardest education jobs because when you have degrees in these fields it's hard to do something lucrative aside from teaching. So there are always a large amount of applicants for jobs and teachers can't leave to go on and do something else because there really isn't much to do.
This isn't to say you should not pursue an education degree or that you should not try to get a job with it, but you should just realize it won't be as easy as if you had a science or math degree, which are almost always in demand at schools and are curriculums that cannot be cut out.

True, artwork lecturers aren't a prime call for role. There's typically just one to a tuition or probably 2 if it is prime tuition. K-12 could supply you extra range. There are different approaches to train artwork and in these days on this unhealthy monetary surroundings, you'll have to be extra ingenious with this. Teaching residence schooled youngsters is a technique. Private faculties yet another and Saturday categories yet another. Summer categories are constantly wanted - and that is how we can train at some point, if no longer now. We can not permit artwork fall by means of the wayside simply on the grounds that a few legislators stated youngsters needed to cross a few pencil and paper experiment which ended in artwork, song and different electives being pulled from the application. These at the moment are changed by means of REMEDIAL experiment taking. So that's the truth of it. It's slightly more difficult in the market to get the artwork task however you'll nonetheless do it and be very effective. Think "target" right here - how approximately your very possess artwork tuition that you simply run? If you particularly desire to train, then you'll do it it doesn't matter what the predicament. YOu would possibly desire to have a moment certification - probably fundamental lecture room? Then you might combine artwork with all of the topics that youngsters have too- each and every artwork trainer's dream! So to reply your query - sure, primary in K-12 artwork schooling. But take a moment certification as a backup. Use your artwork anywhere you'll. And educational advisors have certainly not been artwork lecturers. They quite often don't have any clue approximately artwork ed. and what's concerned. They suppose all of us play all day. And we do! What different task are you aware in which you'll paint, do clay and simply have a laugh all day with youngsters AND be paid! It is the fine task on this planet. Go for it Good success

Art is getting cut at a lot of schools for various reasons. Budget cuts, they are upping the requirements for math or science or english. If you REALLY want to do it you can. But be prepared to move and look around a lot. I know quite a few art teachers who graduated with me who are quite upset because they weren't told exactly how hard it would be to find a teaching job.
Looking around myself for a math job (I just graduated college in May) I have found that there were quite a few English jobs open. The biggest three right now are math, science and special ed. If you want a pretty safe bet with a job go for one of these three. English you should be able to find one. History is the worst to find. Many of my History friends have found non teaching jobs because History jobs are just not out there.
But in the end what it all really comes down to is do what you like to do. It may be hard and tedious to find a job but eventually if you keep at it you will get it.
