  • What MFA programs in studio art do not require a BFA or previous undergrauate coursework?

I suppose I am the non-traditional art student. I did not go through an art program for my undergraduate degree, but I did take a few courses here and there. I am mostly self taught and my skills are quite decent. My medium is painting and drawing. I am looking to get an MFA and have been unlucky in my search for programs. Lots of the programs require 30-60 hours in studio art classes. Of which I do not have, nor do I really want to get a second bachelors degree.

So what programs out there are open to art students such as myself? I wouldn't mind taking several classes at the community college level because they are cheap, but I am not sure if these courses would qualify for the level of art courses required.

  • Certified to teach art, but not very qualified. What are the next steps?

So I have a bachelors degree in English. I have only 9 credit hours related to studio art and art history. I am a self taught artist, so my skills are far from beginner, but no where near mastery. My main mediums are painting and drawing. Print making, sculpture, ceramics, digital media, photography, are all mediums I am not skilled in. I taught art part time for 7 months in an after school program at a high school. I really loved it and knew I wanted to get certified in art and English language arts.

My problem is this. I am currently a teacher in S. Korea and am earning my teaching certification online through TeacherReady's alternative certification program. I am looking through the content exam study guide for the art test and am realizing how much I really don't know and am starting to feel inadequate. I feel as though I can study and pass the exam, but I don't have the studio credit hours to back up my certification. (In my state, you can get certified in areas that you don't have credit hours in.)

My dilemma is this, even after I pass the art certification exam, would you recommend going back to school for a post-bacc in art? Taking a few community college/university courses? Or just practicing on my own to get my skills a bit better? Since I already have decent skills, is another degree necessary? Money at this point is a factor, not so much time...I'm still pretty young.

    Thank you!

  • Should I go to grad school for my mfa or get my public school teaching certificate?

Basically, here is the deal. I have my BA in English and currently teach the English language full time in South Korea. I took several education classes during college and also taught in the states. In my heart, I know I want to teach art at the college/university level, but at the moment, I'm actually loving my middle school.

So here is the problem. I am a self taught artist. I did not take many classes in college. My skill level is pretty decent though I find it hard to continue perfecting my craft outside of a classroom envioronment. I don't think my skills are ready for grad school so I feel I keep pushing the date back to attend.

I know most people say that you shouldn't get an MFA unless you have this true calling to teaching, which I do, but I also want to broaden my skills and just dedicate 2 years to it. Even though I like teaching English as a second language, and would like teaching English language arts, I know for a fact I want to teach art to adults.

So I'm pulling between just at the moment getting certified to teach public school kids in America or going head on for my MFA. Do any of you have experience with this type of thing? Or have any advice on how I can obtain my goals? Thank you in advance.By the way, I don't know if my age matters, but I am rather young. 22 to be exact.

  • How hard is it to become an art professor? What else do you do for income? What are some tips on getting hired?

I've been doing loads of research and would like to hear some first hand experience. I've been painting and drawing for many years now and already have my BA. I teach an art class at my high school twice a week and would love to at the university level. I also want to broaden my art skills to a brand new level. The next step for me is to enter an MFA program. So can someone help me to see and understand the ins and outs of the college art professor?

  • Should I get an MFA in Studio art (Drawing or painting) AND an MA in English composition and Rhetoric?

I LOVE writing and I LOVE art. I want a career in higher education teaching both English and Art. (English at community colleges and Art at community colleges as well as the University level). I am wondering if this is an unrealistic desire. Do colleges seek after people who can teach multiple subjects that are not in the same department? Is the time that is takes to complete two completely different masters programs really worth it as for the expense too? I was also thinking I could get my MA in English and then complete 18 graduate hours in studio art so that I could be qualified to teach that as well. Is that a realistic option? My complete plan is this - Complete my BA with a major in English which I will be done this summer. Obtain my teaching certifications (to teach middle school/high school) in English and Art. While teaching at the grade school level obtain my MA in English/or/and/extra graduate hours in a studio art. Use teachers remission grants to help pay for graduate degree. Obtain eventually after adjuncting for a couple of years a full time teaching position at a CC. What do you guys think? I am not interested in gaining a Phd as I am not interested in research, just teaching. Thank you! =)

  • Will teaching English abroad help me to get tenure at the community college level?

My ultimate goal is to get tenure at the community college level. I will have my BA in English by the end of July this year. My goal has always been since I first graduated high school at the age of 17 to get my BA in English and teach abroad. With the information that is given to me of whether it will help me or not in my pursuit to a tenure professor regardless, I'm still going for the experience. My main destinations are S. Korea, China, and Japan. I would like to teach abroad for a maximum of two years for now and then come back to the United States and complete my Masters in English with a concentration in composition and rhetoric. Another reason why I would like to teach abroad at least in South Korea is because I would like to pay off much of my undergraduate student loans and save for grad school. Thank you everyone for your answers.

  • What do you think about mixed relationships? How can I handle this situation...?

Ok. So me and my current boy friend have been dating for about a month now and literally EVERY time we go out to the movies, the grocery store, the mall, we get stared at A LOT. I'm Black and he's mixed with Caucasian and Hispanic but he looks more Caucasian. I've been in 2 other mixed relationships (both were less than 2 weeks long) but those were when I was in grade school and I don't really count those. My previous bf was Black and we dated for 2 years. I live near Houston, TX so I'm figuring that living in the south has something to do with it. Honestly, I love when people are in mixed relationships but it seems that a lot of other people still care. We get a lot of stares usually from older Caucasian people and Black males and females from what it seems like all ages. Negative attention is not going to change my feelings about my current bf because I really like him and both of our families accept that we are from a different race and don't care at all. I've been ignoring it this whole time but sometimes I just want to flick someone off! It's ridiculous. So you people who have been in a mixed relationship for a longer amount of time than I have, how did you handle the stairs and the comments? Thank you!

  • Should I major in Computer Animation or Art Education? =(?

Ok. Currently my major now is Computer Animation. I want to teach art just as much as I want to do animation. The problem is that I am worried about job security with computer animation. And it really wouldn't bother me much to switch my major considering you don't need a degree to do animation anyway. Maybe I would try and learn it on my own. I also know that art teaching jobs are hard to find as well but I live in texas and I would be certified to teach EC through 12th grade so it wouldn't be that hard to find right? And I know once I have the job, I don't have to worry about job security.

Which one do you think I should probably major in? I also plan on getting my masters strait away. In Art Education if I keep my major computer animation, or in art history, if I switch my undergraduate to art education.

    thank you!

  • I really like this guy and he really likes me but he's an atheist and I'm a Christian?

I had been praying to God for about two months to bring someone special in my life. I met a guy in my art class. He is really sweet. And we have expressed to each other that we like each other and are considering dating. Though since he is an atheist, this creates a major problem. Having a mate that is a Christian is very important to me. I haven't brought it up to him considering I have only known him for less than a month. I also don't understand why God would bring someone in my life that is an atheist. I suppose you could say that I am fairly attractive so I get hit on a lot. But 98% of the guys that hit on me are NOT my type at all. But this guy is. I know that it's a disaster waiting to happen so I'm hesitant to pursue anything. What should I do?

  • Can someone please tell me the difference between MA in Art Education and an MA in Art History? Please View.?

I've been looking at different University programs to figure this out but have yet to come up with a clear answer.

I am currently obtaining my BFA in Computer Animation and then I want to go on to get my MA or MFA because I want to teach Art History, Art Appreciation, and possibly Studio Art as well at Junior College level and possibly even get certified to teach art to EC-12 grades.

I know that one must become proficient in another language if they want to get an MA in Art History. I would actually prefer to avoid that. I have taken 5 years of Spanish and I struggle immensely at it which is why I would rather avoid having to learn or (be proficient) in another language.

I was hoping I could get an MFA in Studio Art with at least 18 graduate hours in Art History that way I can be qualified to teach Art History and Studio without having to learn a second language.

If I get an MA in Art Education, do I still have to learn a foreign language? And With this MA, will I still be qualified to teach Art History or Art Appreciation at a junior college level?

    Thank you to all!

  • have you ever had a major crush on a guy that was already taken?

I've had a crush on my manager for some time now. I've been trying to get over it but he is so perfect in my eyes. ughh....I'm not trying to steal him because I'm not that kind of girl. Does any one know of a way on how I can try and get him out of my head. I guess you could say that I am fairly attractive but even when I try and "talk" with other guys all I can think about is my manager. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this feeling?

  • Are art teachers in demand for k-12?

Hi. I am currently a student at a four year University and my current major is a BFA in Computer Animation. I love computer arts. I have two more years left and I have been thinking about changing my major to studio arts with an education minor so that I can teach. I want to teach just as much as I want a career in computer animation, but computer animation is hard to break into for starters, you do not need a degree for that field (just a demo reel and portfolio), and I'm worried about job security. When I first transferred to this school my major was English because I wanted to teach at a secondary level. Then I realized that they had computer animation as a major which was my major for about 5 years but changed it because I could not afford to go to an art school and it is rare at public universities. So I basically want to know if art teachers are in demand. Because if they are not in demand, then I will not change my major if my job outlook is the same. I also plan on getting my masters strait away in Art History because my dream job is to teach at a community college. Thank you for your responses!
