Should I get an MFA in Studio art (Drawing or painting) AND an MA in English composition and Rhetoric?
I LOVE writing and I LOVE art. I want a career in higher education teaching both English and Art. (English at community colleges and Art at community colleges as well as the University level). I am wondering if this is an unrealistic desire. Do colleges seek after people who can teach multiple subjects that are not in the same department? Is the time that is takes to complete two completely different masters programs really worth it as for the expense too? I was also thinking I could get my MA in English and then complete 18 graduate hours in studio art so that I could be qualified to teach that as well. Is that a realistic option? My complete plan is this - Complete my BA with a major in English which I will be done this summer. Obtain my teaching certifications (to teach middle school/high school) in English and Art. While teaching at the grade school level obtain my MA in English/or/and/extra graduate hours in a studio art. Use teachers remission grants to help pay for graduate degree. Obtain eventually after adjuncting for a couple of years a full time teaching position at a CC. What do you guys think? I am not interested in gaining a Phd as I am not interested in research, just teaching. Thank you! =)

It is extremely difficult to get a teaching job in a community college (most are laying off). I have been teaching in a community college for 29 years (full time) and have never heard of a single position that combined studio art and English composition. Colleges are organized into departments and you would need to be part of one of the departments. Art is not normally part of English. You have to apply for an opening that exists (they do not create an opening to match your skills). Once you have a job, it may be possible to teach a course in another department, but it also may not be possible. It depends on the needs of the department and how well they get along. Getting any job in these areas is extremely hard as there will be hundreds of applications for each position. You will probably spend years (maybe decades) teaching as an adjunct with the hope that someday you will get a permanent position. Many of the adjuncts never get the full time job. Being cross trained in some areas (economics and business) can work, but it general it isn't worthwhile. Instead you need to concentrate on one of the subjects. Get published if it's English, and sell art if it is arts. Good Luck.
