Will teaching English abroad help me to get tenure at the community college level?
My ultimate goal is to get tenure at the community college level. I will have my BA in English by the end of July this year. My goal has always been since I first graduated high school at the age of 17 to get my BA in English and teach abroad. With the information that is given to me of whether it will help me or not in my pursuit to a tenure professor regardless, I'm still going for the experience. My main destinations are S. Korea, China, and Japan. I would like to teach abroad for a maximum of two years for now and then come back to the United States and complete my Masters in English with a concentration in composition and rhetoric. Another reason why I would like to teach abroad at least in South Korea is because I would like to pay off much of my undergraduate student loans and save for grad school. It probably won't help much at all. Teaching English in those countries will be equivalent to teaching English language skills, while teaching English at a community college in the US means teaching reading, writing, and composition skills - not the same thing. So while having some teaching experience looks good when applying for jobs, it won't help more than that. Some community colleges offer tenure, others do not.

To find a position teaching English at any 4-year college and most 2-year colleges, you would need a Ph.D. They will sometimes hire a well-known author with an MFA to teach creative writing, but unless you are in that position, you would need a Ph.D. there too.
