has anyone ever had this side effect using previcox?
I really don't know where to start. first off, I have been taking my animals to the same vet for about 9 years. my dogs are a little overweight--- 6-7 pounds, that's all. however he has them on this outrageous diet. i was only feeding them a 1/2 twice and day he wanted me to cut it down so i went to a fourth a cup twice a day, he said to reduce it even more. btw, my dogs are 3 golden retrievers and 1 lab mix. so i am now down to an eighth of a cup twice a day. I am have behavior problems now that i never had before, like turning over their food container during the night and eating, snapping at each other, coming up to the table while we eat, this never happened before this stupid diet, when i mentioned the problems i am having he wants to push pills on my dogs that will suppress the want for food. recently my oldest dog, the lab mix, age 8 yrs, was recently diagnosed with hip dysplasia. my vet put him on previcox, tramadol 50mg, glyco flex stage 3, and adaquin shots. if you read the side effects of the previcox it says this........ "The chewable tablets are not suited for all dogs. The active ingredient, firocoxib, may have side effects that should be reported to the veterinarian.
Confusion-
Watch for behavior changes in the dog, such as being uncoordinated, aggressive or having seizures.[my dog bit me]
Itching--
A dog can be allergic to NSAIDs such as firocoxib. Signs may include itching, scratching or skin sores. [my dog is stratching all the time]
Thirst---
Look for unexpected changes in the way the dog drinks and urinates. The medication may have side effects that affect the kidneys. [he is drinking more]
Precautions
Do not mix Previcox with other medications, especially painkillers such as aspirin, corticosteroids or prednisone
Vomiting, Diarrhea
Yellowing
the first thing it says is not suited for all dogs--- second thing is aggression.
well my dog bit me friday night--- i startled him, as soon as he bit me and realized what he done he just stopped and looked at me like oh god what did i do. it wasn't a ferious bite just a snap, done, i am sorry type thing. i say its the previcox---- the vet jumped all over me--- that dog is not to be allowed on the bed again{thats where he was at when i startled him}, he said he has other dogs on p
the previcox is the med that says it can make a dog become aggressive, not the tramadol. my dog has mild hip dysplasia, so he is able to walk just has problems getting up. he has been on glyco flex for 3 months now, he is still in the first month of adaquin shots. i took my dog off of the pervicox right after he bit me, no biting problems now. i also put ALL of them back on the 1/2 cup food twice a day--- no problems now with the other dogs. the food was not the problem with the dog with hip dyplasia, i startled him, but i have startled him before the previcox and never get bit. i also spoke with a different vet today. he agrees with me. the previcox could be the culprit. as for the other dogs he asked me if i was having any problems before changing their diet and i did not have problems. so he said to go back on the diet i had them on to begin with, which i had already done. he said goldens should weigh 65-70 f and 75-80 m. my male was 76 before the diet. i will be changing vets.
THE ONE ON PREVICOX WEIGHS 61LBS, HE WAS TAKING HALF A TABLET A DAY. HE IS A LAB MIX.

I'm not a vet, I don't play one on tv & I didn't stay in a holiday inn express last night. I have had multiple dogs for the last 25+ years of various sizes and breeds.
One concern that your vet has about the excess weight, is that in the larger breeds, being overweight exacerbates joint problems that are simply part of the aging process. Hip dysplasiai one of those problems.
Was your dog in such bad shape that he couldn't even walk?
Here's what your dog is on
previcox - an anti-inflammatory medicine
tramadol - a pain killer
glyco flex stage 3 - a nutritional supplement
adaquin shots - here's a link on those:

I go to my vet for diagnosis, advice, treatment options and then make a decision about what to do. I do NOT believe in "quick fixes" for health problems.
If this were my dog, I'd cut out the tramadol and see how he does. Continue the previcox, but check the dosage instructions for his size and make sure you're not overdosing him. The glyco flex is going to take 3 months to start taking effect, so be patient. As for the shots, read the link I posted and decide is this is something you want to complete now or wait.
I believe that the behavioral problems you are having is because your dogs are hungry.
My History - Whenever I get a puppy, the puppy is always fed twice a day until 6 months of age. My other dogs always want something when the puppy is fed. With the last two puppies (both pomeranians), I gave the beagle and basset hound 1/4 cup in the morning when I fed baby dog. I cut their evening food by the 1/4 cup. They gained weight! Don't ask me why - they did!
If your vet is concerned, you've got to get that weight off, but it's pretty obvious the current method isn't working.
My basset hound is now a trim 50#. He was up to 65# at one time, but I cut his food and restructed the type of dog treats I gave him. It took a year, but the weight gradually came off without trauma. He now gets 2 cups of food in the summer & 2 1/2 - 3 cups in the winter. My beagle (formerly 45#) weighs 33# - she gets 1 1/4 in the summer and about 1 3/4 - 2 in the winter. Keep in mind that it took a YEAR to get their weight down - it didn't happen overnight!
Feed your dogs no more than 2 cups of food each ONCE a day. In a couple of weeks, cut them down to 1 1/2 cups and stay there. Use measuring cups - don't think you can eyeball it. Feed them in separate bowls.
If your family members are sharing food with them (the main culprit in my dogs' weight problems), explain to them that it has to stop - yesterday. I had to get ugly about it and I have to watch my dh or he will get it started again.
Treats (if you do them) - put the same kibble you feed them for their meals in their treat jar. They won't notice the difference because a treat is something you get outside of meal times. That way they can get 2 or 3 "treats" and not bust their calorie budget.
As for kibble, whatever you have traditionally fed. I tried the "weight reduction" type and mine did fine with the regular, just in limited doses.
If you don't have a large yard for them to run & play in, leash them up & walk them for at least 15 minutes.
I hope I helped!
