A question for Muslims...?

Yesterday, my sister and I were discussing different religions (we're protestant christians). She made the comment to me that muslims are taught to be outwardly peaceful with everyone while inwardly hating anyone who is not of the same faith. Is this statement true? Are there any verses from the Quran that you could provide on this subject?

The Bible teaches the following:

Matthew 22:37-40

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,

and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like unto it,

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the

prophets."

Matthew 5:43-44

43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.

44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Update:

@I keep it Halal: I understand your view. Sadly many religions have spilled blood in the name of God almighty. Those who do such things are hypocrites. They will face judgement be punished for their crimes.

Update 2:

@ oops: I understand the issues with the Old Testament. However, the Christian faith is that of the New Testament. The Old Testament is simply a history lesson.

Hebrews 8:13

By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

Hebrews 8:12-13 (in Context) Hebrews 8 (Whole Chapter)

Update 3:

@ Bright Noor: I do see what you're saying, although, I think you may misunderstand. In the first Bible verse you gave, its a matter of refusing to justify the anger of a person who is not trying to kill you. In other words, not fueling the fire. In the second verse, the sword is against sin. Obviously to those who do not want to admit their wrong doing or accept the truth this is not going to be a peacful thing. We war within ourselves to do what is right and the Bible is our sword of instruction against sin. As for the Quran verses, you're referring to self defense or the defense of the oppressed. War should always be a last resort and should only be to protect the innocent.

Psalm 72:4

He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; He will crush the oppressors.

Update 4:

@ Think Tanker: I see love the way it is described in 1 Corinthians 13. Its too long to post here but you can find it at:

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+cori...

I see it as the love of a mother for her child. No matter what that child does, good or bad, and no matter what we as parents are forced to do (discipline or even turning away from them) we will always, ALWAYS love them. This is how we should love everyone.

Update 5:

@ pianomusic: I see what you're trying to say, but the verses you posted with it aren't proving anything other than difference in opinion through difference of interpretation. The first verse you gave states that there is room for correction, therefore still leaving the Old Testament "obsolete" and only a history lesson. As for the Bible you basically just said the same thing I did in a different manner. The Bible is a "sword of instruction". As for faith and works, you and I have been down that road before. Faith and works go hand in hand. You cannot be saved by one or the other alone, you must have both. Please see the following verses:

James 1:22

James 2:14-26

26As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

It is both a true and false statement. I believe most Muslims have peace outwardly and inwardly, at least those I personally know do. However, there are also Muslims who show outward peace but who have hatred in their hearts for anything not Islamic. I think they focus more on the passages of the Quran that talks about intolerance rather than on the passages that teach about peace.

The same can be said about people who claim to be Christians, but don't act like it. They may go to church, pray every day, listen to Christian music and Christian programming and read the bible daily, but inside they are bigots, racists and hate mongers. They too seem to twist the words of the Bible to benefit them and say they are doing God's work when they aren't.

Please do not base your opinion of Muslims by those who come to Y!A, because most do not represent the peace that was taught in the beginning of Muhammed's mission.

I watched a video recently where this guy was raving about his "friend" who was a Muslim and how he learned all these secret things from him...the majority of the clip was total rubbish. One of the things he mentioned was this idea you presented, being all nicey nicey on the outside, but secretly hating on this inside. He said it was an idea put forth by the great Islamic historian, ibn Kathir, but the guy on the clip didn't include any references.

"this dunya..." has given a good answer.

Just as you and (most) Christians feel those who have spilled blood in the name of God are hypocrites and will be punished for it, so too do (most) Muslims. In fact, In Islam we are taught that to save a life, is like saving all of mankind, and to take a life, is like killing all of mankind. So it is a grave and serious offence to kill someone who has not harmed you in any way.

If you think about it, how on earth could a billion people all maintain such duplicity? Most people who try to be different on the outside than they are on the inside, either slip on a regular basis, or go crazy with the effort. Not many people could do this, let alone a billion people, young and old, from all walks of life, all living two lives. It's a scare tactic, fear mongering, nothing else.

    I am a muslim

i will tell you honestly what i was taught here:

    1. respect other people (inwardly and outwardly)

    2. respect other religions

    3. love others more than oneself

    4. pay money for the poor

    5. respect elder people and be kind with the young

i can't mention all, but there is nothing that is bad that i was taught about

absolutely everything about peace. no doubt rumors were spread about islam in other non muslim countries but honestly that is what a true muslim is really taught

“ Whoever persecutes a non Muslim or demands work from him beyond his capacity or takes something from him with evil intentions, I (Prophet Muhammad) shall be a complainant against him on the day of Resurrection.”(Hadith)

Prophet Muhammad said: “One who hurts a non-Muslim, he hurts me and one who hurts me, hurts God.” (Hadith)

“… and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious.” (16: 125)

“ Do not argue with the people of the Book, unless it is in the politest manner.”(29:46)

"As for such of the unbelievers as do not fight against you on account of your faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, Allah does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave toward them with full equity. Indeed, Allah loves those who act equitably." (Surah Al-Mumtahinah 60:8)

"Say: 'O People of the Book (i.e., Jews and Christians)! Come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with Him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah.' If then they turn back, say ye: 'Bear witness that we (at least) are Muslims (bowing to Allah's Will).' (The Noble Quran, 3:64)"

"And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book [Jews and Christians], those who believe in God, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to God: They will not sell the Signs of God for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and God is swift in account. (The Noble Quran, 3:199)"

"Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians] are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of God all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration. They believe in God and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous. (The Noble Quran, 3:113-3:114)

There are so many verses like this sis, people just need to stop feeding on the propaganda their fed about Islam and open up a Qur'an and read it. Around the world, Muslims are being persecuted, beaten up and terrorized for their beliefs. This is all because of sheer ignorance and an unwilling attitude to learn about another faith, yet happy to keep a strong prejudice against it.

The thing that makes me really sick is how whatever happens, its always the Muslims fault. Just blame the Muslim "terrorist."

    Salam (peace)

We are not suppose to force our religion on anyone. If they dont want to accept Islam,we have no say.

" Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. " (Qur'an 2:256)]

If they are interested in Islam

    Allah tells us the following

Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. (16:125)

Allah tells us if people want to learn Islam, preach to them in a beautiful manner.

Islam is a beautiful religion, therefore the only way you could preach it is with manners and tolerance.

I think you already have got good answer to your question.

But, I would like to make two points here.

In Islam we do not use the word "love" excessively. Love is the sense of deep attachment to somebody. The way Christian missionary promote love, it is utter abuse of the word love itself. Humans by nature cannot love indiscriminately. Most likely, the saying of Jesus is mistranslated in Bible. Possibly it could be word for "good behavior", I am not sure though. We are suppose to behave nicely with others. We are supposed to be kind with others and we are suppose to have mercy on others. But, love is specific, humans cannot just love a person without having any knowledge. Such claims will be meaningless claim.

One more point I would like to make is that, there is difference between hating for personal reason reason and heating for religious reason. We hate Satan and I guess even Christians too justify hating Satan. Why??

It is simply because your faith demand hating evil and agents of evil. In the same way, if Muslim hate those who killed and have been killing thousands of Muslims, you cannot consider it as personal hate. This hate is due to an ideology and faith. Personal revenge is different from desire to eliminate evil.

The bible is full of contradictions, it makes no sense for example:

Here Jesus is preaching peace 'But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also' (Matthew 5-39).

But then in the New Testament, we see the quite opposite: 'Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword' (Matthew 10:34).

It just doesn't make sense! this is only few examples, if the bible is the word of God then surely it would be perfect like the Quran?

In the Quran (2:191-194) it says, And fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight against you, but do not transgress. Surely, Allah loves not transgressors. And kill them wherever you meet them and drive them out from where they have driven you out; for persecution is worse than killing. And fight them not in, and near, the Sacred Mosque until they fight you, then fight them: such is the requital for the disbelievers. But if they desist, then surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful. And fight them until there is no persecution, and religion is professed for Allah. But if they desist, then remember that no hostility is allowed except against the aggressors.

If you love God then you would fight in the cause of God, if someone does something bad to your mother then surely you are not going to sit there and accept it, in here we are dealing with something way greater than your Mum, It is the Creator of your Mum

Hope you see where I am coming from, :)

"Surely you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He pleases, and He knows best the followers of the right way."

    (Quran 28:56)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) loved his uncle, Abu Talib very much, who was a non muslim. Rasulullah (s.a.w.) wished that his uncle embrace Islam, but it is Allah who guides people to Islam, not him or anyone else. The meaning of this verse is, you could love the non muslims and wish the best for them (even wishing for them to embrace Islam, the best gift of all) , but you must remember one thing ... it is Allah who guides people to Islam ... not you.

    Hi shenzara,

I am not Muslim but just want to correct your understanding of the Holy Bible. First of all; the Old Testament is not just a history lesson. We as Christians cannot derive full truth from just the New Testament. Sadly, this is what many Christian churches are teaching. The whole Bible - Old and New Test. - are really one book; given to us from the mouth of God.

“All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (2Ti 3:16 AV)

The word "inspiration" in the Greek means "breathed".

“But he answered and said, It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.'” (Mt 4:4 AV)

    Jesus was quoting Duet.8:3.

It is true that the ceremonial laws of the Old Test. are no longer to be kept by the churches and people of God. When the New Test. churches became the representatives of the Kingdom of God and the custodians of the Bible, they were commanded to keep just two ceremonial laws: that of water baptism and the Lord's supper. Like the Old ceremonial laws for the Jews, though, the New ones also became stumbling blocks for Christians because they have been taught that in order to be saved one must keep these laws. In other words, a gospel of works.

Believing or faith, while not a ceremonial law, has also become a commandment whereby the churches teach that if you believe in Christ as the Son of God and savior then you will be saved. Again this is a gospel of works because believing is work that we do. Certainly the Bible was authored very confusing and with SEEMING contradictions but these are all testing stones and stumbling blocks to see how carefully the Christian is going to study God's word and ultimately it serves to separate the true believers from the false believers; in other Biblical words: the wheat from the tares (Mt.13).

As for Jesus "bringing a sword" it does not have anything to do with physical fighting and combat. In the Bible the "sword" means the word of God (Ephes.6:17). To many, the word of God is a savor of death. In other words it condemns and judges just as it will on the last day. To a few (the elect) it is a savor of life. Just like bread gives us physical sustanence; the word of God gives us Spiritual life.

"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God" (Rom.10:17)

“For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one [we are] the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life...” (2Co 2:15-16 AV)

When a Christain preaches the true Gospel (word of God) to someone who does not or will not believe (because that person is not an elect of God) then the gospel will be to them the savour of death. However, when it is preached to someone who the Lord is saving (an elect) then it is a savour of life unto life. To that person will God give ears to hear the life of the gospel and cause him/her to believe.

“For the word of God [is] quick (alive), and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb 4:12 AV)

“Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly [places] in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,” (Eph 1:3-5 AV)

If Christ did not pay for your sins, then you are ordained to eternal death.

May God have mercy on us all!

Thanks for asking us Muslims and finding out for yourself.

That's not true! We're told to be outwardly peaceful and find peace in our heart too - Islam means finding peace through submsision to God. Muslim means the one who submits to God, and if you submit to God, then you must be a peaceful preson

In Islam, we have two main sources - the Word of God, our holy book which has been unchanged - the Qur'an. and then as a secondary source we havehadiths (statements, traditions, quote from our Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him) (sorry side note on the topic of Prophets, we also believe in Prophet Moses, Jesus, Noah, Ibrahim, and so on peace be upon them...we just don't believe that Jesus is the son of God - we believe there is one God and he does not father nor was he fathered, nor human or anything like that.

one hadith from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well and if they do evil you will do evil. But (instead) accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do evil if they do evil. [Tirmidhi]

there's also stories where people wanted to kill Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and they'd commit disgusting atrocities to him and other believers...and when the Muslims finally gained power, and he (peace be upon him) had the chance for revenge to kill them, he ((peace be upon him) forgave them and didnt

we're taught to follow his example - to be kind even when people are rude to us, to love people for the sake of God if for no other reason, and to find complete peace, to forgive, etc etc

"And the servants of Allah . . . are those who walked on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say 'Peace'" [Qur'an, 25:63]

we're not told Muslims have a free pass to Paradise, we have to work for it..and we don't hate all christians and jews....you'll find muslims who have christian and jewish friends! we most likely love our Muslim brothers and sisters more - but we by no means hate an innocent Christian or Jew...we're told to live and let live.....when the Muslims had power historically, the appointed Jews to high official positions and let Christians keep their churches and everything

most of us certainly do not have hatred in our hearts.

    thanks!
