Why is Gatwick so gruesome?
Why is it necessary to stand in queues for 50 minutes before reaching the departure lounge? Couldn't they at least speed up check-in with more than one counter open given that the security rigmarole takes almost half an hour?

I know what your talking about. I can't stand Gatwick, I much prefer Heathrow. Its not easy to get to either for a major airport. The worst is the South Terminal its old cluttered and the types of passengers you get using it, phew! I returned once from a business trip in Atlanta US a year ago into Gatwick South with the great pleasure of a load of drunken chavs shouting and swearing their way through the arrivals are presumably having been on a binge drinking weekend to Prague or Malia or some place. What sort of example is this showing to people visiting the UK? Simply disgusting, they should have their passports revoked, if they can't behave. There was obviously a lack of security, which is not good in this day and age. I just could not belive it. Personally I think such lager louts are our biggest danger compared to terrorism, with their threatening violent abusive behavior.
Where possible I will try to fly from my local airport Exeter or Bristol. But I think Heathrow is far better than Gatwick south. Never again!

It's not just Gatwick, Stansted and Heathrow are worse.
It really depends on what time your flight takes off - i try to get late flights as i always find it is quicker to get through security and checki-in rather than peak times like early morning or mid afternoon.
Unfortunately due to the Threat off terrorism this queing at airports is something we will have to get use to.

Oh, my poor husband. I just booked his flight back to England to visit his family, and the plane arrives at Gatwick!
I must add that Heathrow is no walk in the park, either. It's as bad as our LAX here in Southern California.

You think Gatwick's bad? Try Lagos. Three hour wait in the sun, then watch stolen by a soldier, then shaken down for cash by immigration...

Airports in Britain are privately owned and must make a profit. To employ more staff would increase costs
